I have updated my AppleTV. The download was pretty quick over 802.11n. The actual software update took about 10 minutes with a few restarts involved. There is a new 'Welcome' video and of course, the new Front Row interface. No re-synching of my media was required, and connection to my iTunes library was automatic. Everything appears to work well.

Nice. Just updated. LOVE that they added in Air Tunes to the Apple TV with the update. I don't remember that being announced but it's SO NICE not having to pay for an Airport Express to stream streaming internet music to my stereo.
On the downside, video playlists don't show up on the TV or Movies sections anymore. They show up in the music playlist section. This is a bit of a bummer. I really wish there was a designated video playlist feature.
Also, it now supports 1080P native resolution. The previous version only went to 1080i.

The installation went smoothly, the new intro is very nice, the new setup is faster than before. My roommates who never liked the AppleTV have been abusing YouTube feature now even though it was there before. The new changes make it very nice. Now we need to get Google to up the resolution for AppleTV users.
I was able to input my iTunes account username and password and rent a HD movie. When it was finally ready to play it told me I was not authorized. Anyone else experience this or have ay solutions besides redoing my account info on the AppleTV and restarting the device?

Ok, I managed to get Dolby Digital from a Video file. The steps are very easy:
Create an mp4 from your DVD or other source with Handbrake or Visual Hub - Audio Settings are not important
If you are ripping a DVD then open Mac the Ripper, choose Chapter extraction, open streams and select the Audio File you want to be extracted
You will now need Quicktime Pro
Open both files (the mp4 and the ac3) in Quicktime. Copy the ac3 stream and paste it to the mp4 file
Save the file as a MOV movie
Import it in iTunes
That was it!!!
I am now trying to figure out how to extract ac3 audio from mkv files...

So now HD rentals are available... but only for Apple TV. Specifically, I looked at a few movies (Ratatouille, Evan Almighty, Live Free or Die Hard) and it said "This movie is available in HD on Apple TV". I can't think of any good reason for this restriction.

Cool interface if you want to pay Apple for content (I prefer Netflix). However now I have problems with my remote. I have to click it several times occasionally for the Apple TV to respond. Not sure I am going to like that type of bug. I could end up shoving a non-response remote someplace dark and deep.
