I have four email accounts configured on my iPhone. GMail, Yahoo, and two other email servers. From what I can tell, Yahoo and GMail work fine.

I'm having issues with the other two mail servers. One of them is Kerio's MailServer running on a Mac Mini. The only ports I have open on the firewall of this server are secure POP/IMAP and regular SMTP.

The second server is almost identical to the first one, with the exception of it being linux-based.

I seem to be able to receive emails into these two accounts, but when it comes to sending, the iPhone doesn't work. Both servers use plain port 25 for SMTP and use authentication. I've double and triplee checked my SMTP setup on the iPhone, but I am unable to send emails from my iPhone via either of these accounts.

I managed several different mail servers on a daily basis, so I'm familiar with ports, protocols, etc. While I can make multiple clients connect to these mail servers I can't make my iPhone work.....

It might be that way that AT&T has their network configured to work with SMTP stuff. SMTP stuff can get messy when accessing one SMTP server over a different network. Do you have the problem when you access those email servers using the WiFi as well as the cellular network? Or is it just with the AT&T network?

Odd.... I think you've bumped me onto the right path. I turned off wifi, and it works fine via EDGE. So I opened up a shell and tried to telnet to the two mail servers on port 25. Its hanging....

So I'm off to investigate my firewall.....

Glad to know that even in going in the completely wrong direction I can still potentially help! :D

I figured you would have a problem with the EDGE network and would be fine with WiFi on your home network. Oh well!

Well, here's the answer:

My ISP (AT&T) blocked port 25 by default.... You have to call their tier-2 support and have it unblocked, so I'm off to do that now.

I recently switched over to AT&T U-Verse for my TV and it comes with their DSL. I got my iPhone afterwards, so I never had a chance to try this with my cable modem from my previous ISP.

Thanks again for the bump in the right direction. I was definitely barking up the wrong tree..... I guess that's what happens when you troubleshoot networks all day and then come home and have to do the same thing..... ;)

It is the product of messing with setting up my laptop and Palm Treo 755p email client to work with SMTP crap with Comcast. As a bye-product, I learned about some of the more general "fun" with SMTP.

You can blame it on the SPAMMERs. It is all their fault that ISPs are locking down their networks for SMTP protocols and servers.
