my ibook started making some disturbing noises[loud fan or whatever] and took forever to load things/start up after powering up.

i had to wait about ten or fifteen minutes for it to get to the log in screen. it finally DID allow me to log in though and stopped

making that scary whirring sound, but i'd still like to know what may have caused this... just ordered an external hd and am hoping

to back everything up before something like this happens again. any help would be great. thanks.

I would boot from the CD that came with your iBook and then run the Apple Hardware Test which could potentially diagnose any serious problems with your iBook.
