There are lessons for Microsoft in that success. First of all, it is both Windows and Mac, same features, same developer opportunity.
It is not trying to re-invent the wheel. It is based on established web technologies.
There is no doubt that there will be Linux/BSD version of that runtime since it is based on already existing tech like Flash 9 which exists on Linux. Adobe also got mobile Flash lite on various platforms including Symbian. For iPhone? Well it is already running OS X, there is no question there.
Now, how to persuade Yahoo Inc. to use AIR in Yahoo Widgets? They already use Flash.
The key to success is being platform neutral as much as possible. MS never got the idea or they can't dare since standards mean their death bell.

"Flex 3 and BlazeDS are open source and available for free"

Actually the Flex Builder is not free but $249 - maybe you were referring to the SDK.

If The MS-Yahoo deal goes through and MS drops Flash for Silverlight, it will not help push Silverlight, but erode Yahoo's traffic even further.

Microsoft is using strong tactics to get Silverlight downloads:
Silverlight based Windows Update, NBC's upcoming Olympic coverage, MediaSite, and other instances that are popping up where Silverlight is required. The Windows Update site is just beta now, but for how long? Either way, Microsoft will count each Silverlight install as a win and be sure to flaunt the numbers if they are positive.
Adobe should be very very careful of how they handle this. The last thing I want is ANOTHER "mandatory" plugin to install on user computers.
If you thought Flash ads were annoying, wait till the Silverlight ones...
