One can edit the sound the alarm makes. Go to the alarm > edit > sound > choose a ringtone or a standard alert.

It's quite a handy travel alarm just double check that you've set am or pm.

I use the timer for parking meters frequently.

What, no GTD related to-do list in there? That's got to be in my top 5. Something to sync with iGTD, etc.

While I agree that universal search and copy/paste are badly needed, they are not "Native iPhone Apps". They are enhancements/add-ons to the system software.

Regarding #3 - Mac controller. There is a wonderful app called Remote Buddy that allows full control of your Mac from the iPhone. I use it in daily lectures to control both Powerpoint and Keynote. It offers full control of iTunes and much much more. Check it out at http://www.iospirit.com/

I, too, would like to see a Quicken application for entering personal expenses on the road and syncing back to our iMac when we get home. An MYOB AccountEdge app for the iPhone would be great for my business transactions away from the office. Everybody's ideas so far have been right-on great!

Excuse me? QUICKEN!

Don't any of you deal with money on a daily basis?

Not just exported, but synced with the desktop. Like Pocket Quicken. iBank 3 has an iPhone WEB 2.0 client that apparently syncs through .Mac, but that's not what I want and it's not good enough.

Has everybody given up on using another phone company or is everybody jailbreaking?

Isn't it totally obvious that the true KILLER APP for the iPhone, the new app that would give it complete dominance in the cell phone marketplace, is true DICTATION SOFTWARE, similar to iListen or Dragon Naturally Speaking. This, in addition to permitting VOICE DIALING, would let a user dictate an outgoing Email, that could later be retrieved on a computer and filed or printed . . .

This is what you get when you ask a bunch of editors what they want to see app wise for the iPhone. I find the list not in line with the masses. If you poll 100 iPhone users at a mall or on a college campus the most striking omission, application wise, is MMS support and video recording. I can not even be an iReporter for CNN because I can not record cool video of traffic accidents or tornados (ok so not in CA, but we have freeway chases!) Even the cheapest lamest audiovox cellphone can do MMS. It's a no brainer!

And this is the kind of reply you get when readers don't read the comments in the thread before posting. We've stated, at least three times now, that the article is meant to cover apps not system-level changes in the iPhone itself. Both MMS and video recording fall in the latter bucket.

My # 1 requirements are:

1) Database
2) Pocket Quicken

Aside from Datebk6 and UltimatePhone, JFile and Pocket Quicken are my principle Treo apps. Without them (or close equivalents) it'd be impossible to move to an iPhone. Which means no iPhone since I'm not carrying around both. I'm not even too picky about Pocket Quicken, and iBank 3 is almost there with the WEB 2.0 iPhone client. (But switching all my data and accounts from Quicken to iBank is prohibitively complicated and, no, I don't want to start fresh.)

Other prime candidates would be an eBook reader that's good and cheap; something like Teal Auto for gas/mileage/repair tracking; SplashID or PasswordsPlus (I've used both and generally prefer SplashID except that they've demonstrated they clearly have no intend of doing anything more about a version 4 Mac OS X sync than talking about it); document editing is high on the list but not as critical. I do use Documents To Go for WORD and EXCEL viewing and editing, and sometimes to read PDFs.

1) GPS
2)Voice recognition for hands free calling
3)Availability of Citrix to be able to access the hospital. Numerous Medical personel are now having to use other PDA's and the Iphone instead of just the one.

The app I used and relied upon most before the iPhone was SplashID - a dedicated database to store sensitive information, such as web login info, frequent flyer, credit card numbers etc, that synced to my Palm. It's the first application I would buy (after a Search utility), and I'd pay serious bucks to get it.

I think one of the interesting things I've learned from this thread is that a lot of people are conflating "iPhone SDK" with improvements to the iPhone's core features. I suspect a lot of people are going to be disappointed by Thursday's announcement, as a result. Maybe.
