This is what you get when you ask a bunch of editors what they want to see app wise for the iPhone. I find the list not in line with the masses. If you poll 100 iPhone users at a mall or on a college campus the most striking omission, application wise, is MMS support and video recording.{quote}

I doubt very much that you polled 100 iPhone users at a mall. Come on, admit it, this is what you want, not necessarily everyone else.

{quote} I can not even be an iReporter for CNN because I can not record cool video of traffic accidents or tornados (ok so not in CA, but we have freeway chases!) Even the cheapest lamest audiovox cellphone can do MMS. It's a no brainer!
{quote}

Are you joking? Do you think most iPhone users want to be iReporters for CNN? Get a compact video camera if that's what you want to do.

I agree with Oldbird's post. Voice recognition is a paramount need for the safe use of this phone. With the touch screen being tricky enough (but great), you lose the ability to feel the number keypad while driving (safely looking at the road). With all of the capabilities of the iPhone, no voice recognition is a big miss.

Other positive ideas posted in response to this article include:

* Financial Mgmt. tracker (though a real version of Quicken for the Mac is due first)

* AIM

* Blog tool

* Text templates

* Photo editing

Thanks for the article. It lets us all dare to dream.

An AIM client is number 1 on the list? Don't they know one has always existed from almost day one (ok, maybe day 30) since the iPhones introduction? The web app is meebo.com. How will a real app be any different or any better than meebo?

If you look at Apollo as an example (an IM client that works with jailbroken phones) you'll find that a real app will be faster than one tied to the Web.

Not only faster, but ... always running; able to handle background notifications; doesn't require keeping Safari (and a page in Safari) open; theoretically able to integrate directly with other iPhone applications (if Apple will allow such things), so you could (for instance) add a new buddy to your iPhone's address book.

MUST haves:
1. Copy / Paste
2. SEARCH!!! I mean, come on!!!! I can't search my contacts?
3. Sync Notes.... What's the point, if I can't do anything with them.
Great to have:
1. Sync over IP... it would be great to sync back up to my desk from the road
2. KeyNote/PPT player
3. Browser plugins... ahem.. Flash?!
:-)

I can't imagine how copy and paste could be implemented. How to select? How to drag that selection to an end point? Tap and double tap are already used with the interface. So with what means can it be done? Maybe triple tap and twirl clockwise? It gets convoluted at some point.

What about accessing the touchpad on the iPhone or Touch to control your Mac? Giving us access to the new pinch and rotate functions of the Pro range. Wired up to your Mac you'd have a direct power source too.

Top 5 third party aps:
1. VoIP - yes I know this will get blocked!
2. IM
3. Touchpad control
4. Flash Player
5. Edit for Office attachments

um, I thought my sarcasm was evident. Actually they did do a poll at my campus, UCSD, of 350 iPhone users and those were the top two!

Actually they don't, there are 3rd party MMS and video recording apps out there. I have them on my phone! Swirly MMS (just updated to both send and receive MMS) and showtime for video recording... do you even own an iPhone?

No, I've never seen one before. Please tell me about it.

In other words, yes, I'm quite familiar with the existing apps for the iPhone, including those for MMS and video. I have, at one point in time, installed pretty much every third party app (both installer-based and otherwise) that I could get my hands on. The MMS and video apps are far from perfect, and both are things that would be done much better as features of the iPhone OS -- which is why we didn't cover them in this article.

The Palm has a similar shareware app called "MealTip" which is excellent! I hope that becomes available.

I dont think anyone has really thought about this, but why not just have apple make a deal with summerboard and customize? Those are two great programs on a jailbroken iPhone and would be great to have, so why does everyone seem opposed to these apps?

I too think that a bank-specific or "ANY" ATM seach utility would be great.

How about a utility that directs you to the closest bathroom and rate it's cleanliness from "Clean" to "Toxic Waste Dump"? I think every woman I know would especially dig that utility.
