Address Book import/export business

None of the import/export commands I have found preserve the contact's photo! In moving to gmail, I imported my address book contacts easily (via csv), but had to re-enter (download) all my photos. And then I signed up at GrandCentral and had to re-enter photos again. I spent a lot of time getting photos of most of my contacts and a lot of time cropping etc to get them just right (in address book). It let's me dynamically crop the photos. gmail needs the photo pre-cropped. What I want to see is a super-general web-based site to become a "master" addressbook, with export capability to all known other formats and some way to handle photos as well! And any other data (like groups) that are hard to get. I am really tired of multiple address books! MyContacts.com anyone?

My most frustrating experience with Address Book is the inability to functionally sync with .Mac after an import. The problem lies in the vCard itself and "item" fields. If an Address Book contact is created within the Address Book application itself, the data will sync properly. If the data has been imported, as many people will do when deciding to use Address Book, then many fields are given an "item" tag in the .vcf address book file and will not sync properly on .Mac or Plaxo or the iPod or a mobile phone. This makes .Mac sync almost worthless. In the Address Book application itself, all the fields are visibly correct, but the sync itself won't work.

When I started with gmail, I used this to convert vcards to csv:
