Hooray! Safari 3.1 killed all my add-ons. I hope there are some updates soon...

Were the database options in security preferences there before?

It's my browser of choice, but I haven't noticed any difference yet with 3.1 except I did the 'double-click the tab bar' thang to get a new tab. :)
If it crashes less than 5 times in the next week then I'll say it's more stable.

Database options weren't there before. It's part of the HTML 5 draft standard. See http://www.whatwg.or...ection-sql.html
Also, "defaults write debugmenu" isn't needed (or doesn't work) anymore. There's now a preference option under Advanced.

No, it wasn't. Here is what is says in Safari Help:

Documents you create using website services, such as calendars or journals, are sometimes stored on your hard disk in the form of databases. You can view and remove such databases, and set a maximum amount of disk space for them.

Some websites provide tools that let you create and edit documents that are then stored on your own hard disk. For example, you might use the tools at a website to create a travel log. When you?re ready to save the information, the website requests space on your disk to store the information you?ve created. The information is stored as a database.

By default, a website can use up to 5 MB of space on your disk for this purpose. If more space is required, Safari asks if you will allow more space. If you click Don?t Allow, the website may not be able to save your information.

In the Safari security preferences, you can specify a maximum amount of disk space for this purpose. You can also view and remove any databases that have been stored. Open Safari preferences and click the Security tab.

You know, I really like Safari. I find that on my system(ibook g4, 256mb, Tiger 10.4.11)it is more stable than Firefox and Camino. Firefox crashes quite frequently whenever I have at least 3 tabs up or if I'm watching a video on Veoh or something(SIDEBAR: I also think its rather ugly) Then Camino, despite their speed, seem to have problems properly loading pages with Flash animations on them and videos take forever to load. Safari seems to load the pages, even with animations and the like, seamlessly. Now with all that said, I still can't say it's the fastest because for me, Camino is eons faster if we're talking speed. I have only used 3.1 for a few hours, and I already cannot tell much difference in overall speed from 3.0.4. Just my two cents.

Same problem with 1Passowrd on my MacPro. I guess I will have to wait for 1Password to provide an update. They usually are good with update and fast to respond. I am surprised they haven't released it simultaneously with Safari. Oh, well, until then, it is Firefox for me.

Opps. I guess I spoke too soon. 1 password has been updated today to 1Password - 2.5.12. Installed it and works for Safari 3.1 on Intel Mac (at least mine). They did provide update in timely manner. All is good in the world again. :)

Seems to move a lot faster as far as I can tell. No issues yet (fingers crossed).

Slow . . . Guess I'm going to have to move to Firefox - what a shame for Safari...

Firefox 3.0b4 is many times faster . . .

They sent us a buggy Safari 3 beta, which has now become Leopard-only. Are they going to make S3 available for Tiger? If not, where can I download the most recent version of Safari 2?

Speaking of add-ons, I've gotten tired of Saft not loading every time there's a Safari update. So I'm going to wait for Saft before upgrading to Safari 3.1 (in OS X 10.4.11). There's nothing in this update that I really need, whereas Saft's ability to remember my tabs and windows and reload them automatically after a restart is very important to the way I work. Safari has a limited version of this feature - you have to remember to go to the History menu first thing and click Reopen All Windows From Last Session. If you forget to do this, your last session will be lost if you quit Safari.
By the way, I made a copy of Safari 3 before trying the 3.1 update, so I have both versions available. They seem to work just fine independently (I haven't tried running them at the same time and probably won't do so). I was a little apprehensive that the update would break the older version - because of the system level changes - but Safari 3 is running just fine - and Saft is still functional.
I'm glad to hear that other people are having trouble with this forum eating their posts. This has happened to me several times and it's quite frustrating to have your work vanish like that. Now I copy and past my text before hitting the submit button. It's also significant that this blog doesn't have a preview feature, where some other Macworld forums do. I'm not sure what the difference is, or why it is. I prefer the other system where you just click on a tab to see a preview version of your post. And it doesn't vanish into this air.

Safari 3.1 is available for Tiger. On the Apple Safari download page (http://www.apple.com/safari/download/) you must select either Tiger or Leopard.

PS: I just figured out what the different posting environments are about: If you type in the box at the bottom of the blog page the options are limited. And one reason a post may disappear - as my pervious one did - is that it is shuffled to a second (or third) page - I never noticed the warning before, but it's there. If you click on the reply button in a post, as I did for this comment, you are taken to a more capable form, which includes quoting, style and preview features. Don't know why I didn't notice this difference before, but there it is. The instant comment box is convenient, but I may avoid it now that I know the reply option distinction. As I did before the forum redesign, if I'm not replying to someone else's post, I'll just go to the top of the page and reply to the first post - which is usually the article headline and synopsis.
