Just like the Dell DJ killed the ipod :)
Anything based on windows mobile will lose to the iPhone. windows mobile is terrible. If dell (or anyone for that matter) wants to take from the iPhone, they need to do exactly what apple did, design something from the ground up.
The iPhone is the best.... period.

So it's just another windows mobile phone. Blech. I don't see how it'd be much different than the current windows phones.

They will need to adopt either Windows Mobile, or Android. But in either case, how much do you want to bet they will not hire some outstanding design firm to create something compelling. I don't know why companies with so much money are so clueless.
I'll bet whatever it is, it won't be interesting.

I wonder if Dell's smart phones will last as long as their MP3 players?

The Dell Axim X51v (the last Axim line prodiced) was and still is an excellent WM5 device. The Axim community was gravely upset when Dell decided to stop production. Thanks to sites like XDA-Developers we now have Windows Mobile 6 on it.
Dell's entire Axim line was never under powered or skimpy and that should hold true for new PDA ventures. I agree that WM devices have to improve to catch the iPhone. Simply discounting it because its WM or made by Dell is an unjust slight.

haha... you took my thoughts...

I loved my Axim as well as the next person. It was just another notch in my quest to attempt to replaced my Newton (along with the myraid of Palms - pilot, pro, III, IIIx IIIxe, V, and m515, But it was still a windows device and ultimately disappointed me. It was left behind in the wake of my LifeDrive. Still ancient technology, but it didn't leave me feeling disappointed. Then the iPhone came along. I have never even thought about looking at anything else since.

If they do try to enter this field, I expect it to find the same fate as their MP3 players and Wince devices.

Isn't it amazing, Apple a computer company comes up with a fantastic phone and Dell who couldn't make an MP3 player, says, "We can do that!". You would think that the board would fire that CEO for coming up with a great idea over a year late! YOu can't play catch up with a company like Apple who is so forward thinking that they are 10 years ahead of everyone else! What will happen went Steve Jobs goes..... Yes, you are correct, the Pepsi man will reappear and become the CEO of Apple and take it to new depths we have never seen. Steve..... live forever....please

Dell would be well advised to begin pushing the cheap Intel laptops when they are available. Forget trying to innovate - they're the Wal-Mart of PC's. Their past success has been based on process efficiency, not product.

While true, Windows Mobile may not be the most amazing OS, it certainly has a lot more functionality than the iPhone. I'm not a big pro-PC fan (Believe me, I'm not) but I'm getting very tired of you MAC fans who think Apple is the best etc.

iPhone is NOT the best. It is very aesthetically pleasing and stylish, but lacks a lot of features such as 3G and has several design flaws such as the recessed 3.5mm jack. But I must admit, iPhone is one hell of a neat gadget... It is far from being the best. Take a look at HTC's smartphones or the REM Blackberries. Have you ever used one before? (I'm assuming you haven't).

You sir, are an idiot.

I have owned a Treo 650, a blackberry 8800, and the 8310. If you check out BlackBerryforum.com, you see my name there, Alex Alexzander, as having written several god posts about the feature-sets of BlackBerry and software applications such as RexWireless todomatrix, IdeaMatrix, BES vs. BIS, other software such as Ascendo DataVault, JiveTalk, and a host of others. I have also discussed at great length there, the differences between iPhone and BlackBerry, to which even the BlackBerry users for the most part agree with my very fair analysis.

So before you jump to conclusions about what I know, and have used, perhaps you should simply ask me why I feel the way I feel.

Name calling only shows you to be quick to judge and not as likely to be a fair minded person.

You say iPhone is missing features. Well I don't disagree. All you had to do is ask. What this has to do with Dell, I'll let you explain that since you took up this position.

Best,

Alex Alexzander
