I exported a movie recorded in QT from Quick time to a movie in mpeg4 format to play in Apple TV. It plays but without a sound because there is no sound in the file exported. Is this normal? If so who need this export capability to MPEG 4 if there is no sound?

I doubt it was recorded in QuickTime. Sounds like multiplexed MPEG.

Let's check. Open "Show Movie Properties" under "Window" with the
movie loaded in QuickTIme. Does it show separate audio and video
tracks, or is there a single line with combined (multiplexed, MUX'd)
audio and video? If the latter, I suggest you download iSquint (free
from isquint.org), and run the video through it.

Who knows? Might work.

It is a QT movie that plays with sound. At the Apple store I was tolled to save it as mpe4 which I did. No sound! No sound in Apple TV and playing the MPEG4 with QT also no sound.
I just checked trying again to export as MPEG4 then I clicked options. It turns out that QT exporting as MPEG4 leaves the sound out.

I am now exporting in a format made specifically for Apple TV. I suspect that now I will sound but it is slower than molasses.
I will let you know if ti works maybe tonight. It is so slow!

Hi -Al,

I had the same problem with NO audio converted from a Sony camcorder which gives QTPro a muxed .mpg file. To play in iMovie I split the file. They're mixed together..grrrr. I used bbdemux to split the audio and video. Its a hassle though. Here is a thread that might help using 'mpeg stremclip and a few others to pick from:

I am now ay in the process of QT exporting the file as a format for Apple TV specifically. It takes over 20 hours exporting one houre of regular QT using QT Pro. I am curious to see the result still over 18 hours to go. If it doesn't work I 'll look for your solution. After all I do nothing the Mac does the heavy lifting in this case. What do I care?

I will let you know how it went. I have another 1 hour movie to do after this one.

You're dating yourself, Doug. I remember those dark ages. That was what, two
or three years ago?

Nowadays? The freebie iSquint and its horribly expensive ($26 US) big brother
VisualHub do the job quickly. Demux and convert to iPod-friendly (iSquint) or
to a bunch of formats (VisualHub). Find 'em both at iSquint.org.

I use VisualHub for everything except DVD Video. VH "does" DVD, but I just
don't much use it for that.

I don't know why the OP asked our advice. He is ignoring it admirably. Just
to be fair, I'm ignoring him, too.

LOL...maybe so. Actually I try NOT to set myself up for conversions any longer. But I've seen VisualHub in action and totally forgot about that software. Thats why we have these here forums... :^0 I'm sure -Albert will return with the rest of the story. It would be nice to see what properties were in the QT file also.

OH...nice Avatar peace sign... B-)

Albertr,

You asked a similiar question in this old [thread|t-97980] of yours. In that thread, I suggested Visulhub. I now read this new thread of yours and find someone else has suggested Visulahub as well. Not only that, the free iSquint (Visualhub's baby brother) was also suggested.

Here's what I find odd. You're being given great advice, but for some reason you're hell bent on not listening to it. What is your problem? You keep asking for help, but ignore it when it's given.

By the time you gave your advise I told you I had found that QT can save specifically for Apple TV. The export in that format takes a long time. I am going to tell you what happens when QT Pro finishes in 10 hours. I thank you for your advise but I have to wait for QT to finish exporting . Tomorrow morning I will have the answer.

I was leery at first of buying the Apple TV because of problems with formats possible. I am stuck having bought first a Iomega that turned out not to be compatible with the Mac and now I have a Apple TV that has it's own set of crazy limitations I did not expected. C'est la vie!

I keep waiting for someone to recognize Uncle Al the Kiddies' Pal (Alan
Sues) from Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In (vintage 1970 or so). It's been
my nickname since then.

Believe me I am not ignoring anyone. I can't afford to ignore anyone particularly anyone who wants to help me. I am totally ignorant of video technology. After asking my question I fiddle with QT Pro and exported to MPEG 4 and to Apple TV format. Over 20 hours each of computer time. I was hoping that it would maybe work. Both time I ended with video on the Apple TV with no sound. Talking to QT help line at Apple I was told: Help cost $200 an hour for QT Pro. It has been years since I bought this Pro update and never had any chance to use any of the added functions. I expect that if it say export to Apple TV it will export to Apple TV all of it not something yes and something no.
No one at Apple could tell me if there is a plug in that can make the miracle of saving in a different format in QT Pro possible.

So now that I am finished with the sorry app called QT Pro I downloaded Visual Hub. It is converting a one hour MPEG 2 to MPEG 4 as I write. I will let you know what happens when it is finished. I keep my fingers crossed. If it does, I will be happy to pay the shareware if not I will try the other advice left. Hard to believe but it is already more than 2 days on this project. Supposedly Apple TV is user friendly. I know already that QT isn't for years.

I truly appreciate the help but I had to wait to see if the QT Pro was going to do it or not. I'll let you know when this plays in Apple TV with sound

OK! I start to see the light! Visual Hub has converted from MPEG 2 to MPEG 4 successfully somewhat. The new MPEG 4 has sound! But, yes there is a but. The original files in MPEG 2 has 3.39 GB the resulting MPEG 4 has only 22.3 Mb. It stops at this point. What am I doing wrong? I have tried twice and each time it stops at the same spot.

Another problem with stupid a stupid way to sell shareware! VisualHub gives you months to try the software. That's what it said. So before paying I am trying. The trial is a lie. They give you exactly 22.3 Mb to see that it works and stop. I am trying to register VisualHub. It doesn't accept my my name and email and says it isn't how what I used while downloading the shareware! What's wrong with those people?

I think I will give this up and burn a DVD with the same result on the TV screen if this doesn't work out soon. This is the 3rd day with no result.

Hi
Lets start over here.

What is your source file you are trying to convert to play on apple TV?

and Do you have the latest version of MPEG Streamclip installed on your computer.

This process should not be this hard. There are a number of different was to get it on Apple TV.
