Okay will it play in mpeg streamclip?
If it will play in mpge streamclip open the clip and select in and out points.
In order to do a test to see if it will play on Apple TV you can export a small portion of you clip. 10 to 30 seconds just to see if it will play and the quality.
You can set the In and Out points to just export that portion of you clip. Under Edit> Select In (this will select the in point) Edit>Select Out (this will select the out point) Move the play head somewhere on the time line.
Select you in point Edit> Select In
Move the playhead down the timeline select your out point Edit>Select Out
Choose Export to MPEG-4
H.264 click on the iTunes tab and select your Apple TV size. Choose a size that is the closest to your source movie clip. All the settings will be chosen for you next hit Make MP4
and see what happens.

I was too impatient. It is converting already 10 % of the MPEG 2 into MPEG 4. I did not change the setting hoping that they are good enough for Apple TV.
I have made DVD's out of MPEG 2 that play very well viewed on a TV. Why would Apple TV not accept MPEG 2? If it works I will thank you profusely. I keep my fingers crossed. I do not want to stop to make a test.

Quicktime also has an option to export to Apple TV Export>Movie to Apple TV and you can do the same thing with in and out points.
It's nice to use the in and out points because it will save you time in exporting something that your not even sure if it will open. Some clips will take hours some take minutes but there is no need to waste time exporting something that might not even be correct.
You can also drag the movie into iTunes and use iTunes to convert it to an Apple TV format. Select you movie like so
With you new mp4 movie open itunes drag and drop in into itunes and under in the menu bar under Advance > Convert Selection for Apple TV and it will tell you either it is already in the correct format or it will convert it without any warning .
Let me know how it goes.

Quicktime has never be able to edit/encode/convert muxed video file. And mpeg-2 and mpeg-1 videos are muxed files. Even with the mpeg-2 component from Apple, Quicktime can't convert the video. There is an mpeg-2 encoder but thats bundled with DVD Studio Pro.
That's where Mpeg-streamclip comes in to play. Mpeg-streamclip can edit/encode/convert mpeg-2 video.
{quote} Why would Apple TV not accept MPEG 2{quote}
Because thats more or less a compression codec also used for DVD's your audio is most likely AC3 which is also used in DVDs. The reason you don't have audio in your video is because Quicktime doesn't support AC3 audio.

I am getting an education! I really know next to nothing about video. The MPEG Stream clip I got once to see a emailed video. I did not know it converts. All this time it comes up when a friend emails me videos if I double click and it tells me it can't open that format. So now I never double click on a video.
Q.T. In preferences has Plug In for download. The trouble is I have no idea what they do nor do I know if I need them.
The whole problem started because a Apple guy on the floor of the Apple store told me I could save in MPEG 4 from Q.T. His advise was useless I wasted two days trying.
38% converted so far. I can't wait to see the result!

The Power point I receive are easy to open. I right click and then click choose App then I open it with Neo-office App. No problem. I also use VLC to open other and Real Player.
In QT Preference if you click Update in the next window in the middle you get Install. Click on it and will get you a mind boggling choice of Plug Ins. I discovered this today in my despair to try to convert from MPEG 2 to MPEG 4 and Apple TV.

Okay I am with you now you can hit itv install button if you want it just takes you to a QT web page. Most things that we are going to do with QT are already installed with QT Pro. Unless you are streaming live video or working with DivX video. Most of the components aren't free. You really don't need to worry to much about those plug-ins. I haven't found a reason or had to, install any of them.
How far along are we?

Great! I was worried that maybe one of the Plug ins would have helped me convert the movie but did not know which one.
55% done! The beauty of X is that it is multi tasking so I do not worry that much that a process is going on it's own in the background. I like the idea that you asked "How far are we?" Thanks!

I got up early, not even 5 AM. The conversion is finished of course. iTunes accepted it and Apple TV plays it WITH SOUND!!!! So easy to do. Why are people trying to make it more difficult? Why is MPEG 2 burned on a DVD playing perfectly well on any TV and not on Apple TV?
Thank you! You have made me from a video ignoramus into a little bit of a video wiz. I thank you so much. Apple TV is not user friendly as Apple claims it is.
