I am currently at my Parent's house for the Holidays. Since I drove this time rather than fly, I decided to bring my computer with me. This has led to some problems though. Since I couldn't bring my DSL connection with me, I have set up a temporary AOL account for while I am here. I have had some problems with this, but have gotten most of them worked out. However there is one problem left that I am hoping one of you can help me with. I cannon currently send e-mail out through my .Mac account. I can receive e-mail but not send it. I am using the latest version of Mail and every time I try to send out an e-mail it gives me that message asking me to enter my password. So, any suggestions?

Hi Glenn,
Happy Holidays at home with family!
Are you accessing your .Mac account through Webmail? I was traveling overseas for three weeks
and I was able to use my .Mac account only through Webmail as long as I had and internet connection.
You did not say. So if you are not go to Apples .Mac web pages to access your mail.

No, I am not accessing my account through the web site. I have been trying to use Mail, the e-mail program that came with OS X. I can download messages sent to my .Mac address. I just can't send e-mail from that application. I am wondering if it has to do with AOL not allowing me to send e-mail out through a server other than there own. If so, is there a way to adjust the settings within Mail to let me get around this?

You can add an outgoing mailserver in Mail.
To do so, go to the preferences, account, select your account and edit, at the bottom there should be a pull down menu where you can add an SMTP server.
It seems that it is quite a hassle to remove it from there but it can be done. I just left them in there, they're not in the way..
Hope this fixes your problem.

Hi CMYK,
If Glenn was was using any ISP other then his parents AOL account,
he could add another temporary account in Mail App. AOL doesn't give its users incoming and outgoing server information.
Glenn can easily access his .mac account while away from his own ISP by using .Mac Webmal. That is what it is for.

So, in other words, AOL will not allow me to send e-mail from my .Mac account out through their system. That is what I was afraid of. Oh well. It's really not that big of a deal. As a few of you have pointed out, there is still the web site.
BTW, it's not my parents' AOL account. They use a completely different ISP. Unfortunately, I kept getting an authentication failure when I tried to log in using that account. So, I went to the local CompUSA and got and AOL CD and am using the free introductory period while I am here. (This is the second time I have used them when for some reason I could not use my normal ISP.)

No Glenn that is not what I said. You can access the internet by logging on to AOL. Then open your browser, ie IE or Chimera, and go to Apples .Mac web page and use Webmail.
You can't however use your Mail App. to read and write mail while in AOL. Everything you access in Webmail can be saved if you check the boxes, and accessed later on your computer if you have your .mac accouunt set up as IMAP.
