iMac speakers no longer work

My purple iMac built in speakers suddenly quite making any sound. The built in speakers are now silent. I've checked all the sound settings with no success. Everything there is as it should be. When I try headphones they work just fine and all the normal sounds are present and the cd player works. However when they are unplugged the built in speakers do not work. I'd appreciate any suggestions. I haven't open the shell yet - I did that over 1 year ago to juice up the ram and that went well. Am I going to have to look under the hood again to get some sound? ( I'm hoping not ) Thanks! Greg

Have you tried trashing the sound preference in the systems folder then restarting. Try that, and let us know....

Re: Still out
Don't know anything about the hardware in the old iMacs. However, if you can't get it fixed here's another option:

Get an Onkyo MSE-U33B USB Hub/Audio Processor.

I got one for $30 and have a usb chord from my computer to it, then an RCA chord from it into my reciever. It's nearly flawless.

On startup, do you get the startup chord from the speakers?

If YES, the problem is software. Logic being that on startup, the potentially corrupted or incomplete system has not loaded and you are running off of PRAM.
