Re: Mac OS 10.2.4
I just installed it and so far so good. I haven't seen any difference yet though.

Re: Mac OS 10.2.4
Install it, but do the following as well...

1) Repair Disk Permissions
2) Update prebinding in MOX Optimize
3) Run DeLocalizer

Re: Mac OS 10.2.4
CharlesVan do you honestly expect most people to understand your advise let alone follow it? I would consider myself at least somewhat savvy in OS X and I have no idea what 'update prebinding in MOX Optimize' means. The poster that asked the question, has 6 posts, and want's to know if he should upgrade to 10.2.4? Do you actually think his level of geekiness is great enough to understand yours? I'm saying this somewhat tongue in cheek, however I think it would be benificial if you were to cater your responses to the question posted rather than flaunt your intellect. Now if you could enlighten me, how and why would one update the prebinding in MOX Optimize? thanks

LOL I back you up on this one macjam!

"Update prebinding in MOX Optimize" - gee!

Here's another tip: While folliwing these tips make sure you don't accidentaly delete the "convergent defluxtatory superuser BRD regenuflection prefs files".

CharlesVan, no hard feelings - just explain to us mortals why and how should we do the things you say we should.

Re: Mac OS 10.2.4
macjam... i'd explain it to you but i'd run the risk of flaunting my intellect. gimme a break. i'm only trying to help. if you don't understand, just ask... without insulting. (From a fellow Canuck no less!)

Mojo... you Run Disk Permissions because permissions always get screwed up after software and OS upgrades. It's a "feature" of OS X... I don't try to understand why, I just repair permissions on a regular basis. You can find it in Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>First Aid.

You should run DeLocalizer because the update adds a lot of language files that you don't need. You can find it at www.versiontracker.com

While you're there, download MOX Optimize as well and it'll allow you to easily perform "update prebinding," which optimizes the system. Software Update already performed this step when installing 10.2.4 but I found everything to be sluggish after the install, which is why I used MOX Optimize to do the prebinding again. Everything ran smoother afterwards.

More on "update prebinding"...

"Optimizing" refers to the execution of a process called "update_prebinding," which allows applications to open faster by precalculating the address information of system data the applications use. This optimization is performed on the Mac OS X startup disk when Apple updates certain system components."

Re: Mac OS 10.2.4
You can also update prebinding by using the terminal (found in application/utilities/terminal

1) load up terminal
2) then type in sudo update_prebinding -verbose -force -root (or copy and paste )
3) Terminal will ask for your password, type it in
4) Terminal will then say updating prebinding on shed loads of files
5) Finally it will say prebinding was done on X number of files and unable to do it on Y number of files. Quit terminal.
6) Restart computer and performance should have improved

This will only work if you are an administrator btw (system preferences and my account will tell you if you are)

CharlesVan, thanks for the delocaliser tip!

Re: Mac OS 10.2.4
Um, guys, the "Optimizing System Performance" process in the Mac OS X Installer updates the prebindings. There's no need to do it again after you install something.

Re: Mac OS 10.2.4
Not only that, but there's a fix_prebinding process that the system runs in the background periodically whether you know it or not. At least in 10.2 or later.

Just so the laymen don't freak out about all those extra steps, #1 is a nice preventative measure, #2 is not really necessary after 10.2, and #3 is just a tip to save space by removing non-English files.

Hmm...maybe that's why the Optimizing System Performance never lasts as long as it did in Mac OS X 10.1.

When I used the Installer in 10.1, the Optimize... took longer than installing the software. In 10.2, it's really fast.

Well, you learn something new every day.

I learned that you didn't need to do it anymore when the author of Xoptimize (the definitive prebinding utility) announced on his website that his utility was no longer required as of 10.2.

Re: Mac OS 10.2.4
Sorry to diverge but Here's a New Question! Dockiling? A little window opened after the 10.2.4 restart that told me a new "dockling" which would appear in my dock...the message went on to state Apples' standard 3rd party disclaimer...don't call Apple. So like where or what was this dockiling icon suppose to be, lead to, or look like. Nothing new in my dock...maybe I already had it, maybe as in "PreFling" the the 3rd party dock icon shortcut to system preferences.

Am I missing something, again?

Thanks everybody,

Hap
