OS X's memory management system is what makes things like multithreading, multitasking, etc., possible. It's what makes OS X a modern operating system. Take away OS X's memory management system and you're back in the dark ages.

What is causing you to want to turn off virtual memory? Maybe there is something else you need to do.

I think the best way to "turn off" virtual memory is to add as much RAM as the machine can take...

Being new to macs i've been doing some reading and for audio it was suggested that the VM be disabled as i have done for years in the pc world. doing so on a pc greatly improves the overall performance of the machine with the exception of vidoe which it kills. in the pc you would then adjust your min/max file caching based on the installed ram...along with other system tweaks.

my new rig is:
Power Mac G4 dual 1.25 ghz with 1.75 gb pc2700/333 ram.

Great machine (wish I had it)! You have plenty of RAM so only in very unusual instances would VM be in use anyway.

OS X only uses VM if it needs to. In your case, it probably won't need to, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

i hope not, but we ran a test (on a friends mac) of 46 tracks and 24 plugs that were just eq. since motu/dp4 does not have resident dsp dedicated for this everything draws on the system to run. i have to say that i am dissappointed in the results so far. his rig is a dual 1 ghz / 2gb ram: under that load the clock was severely affected, very spasmodic to say the least. i'll be the first to admit that windows and the pc are not all that but i could run 60 tracks with 48+ plugs (not lincluding eq, gate, compression, delay, limiters, chorus, flange and reverbs...are all resident to the card and app.) without the seveer clock problem. to say that after investing close to $15,000 in this system i'm a bit nervous is a huge understatement and i hope i'm able to work it out...with a little help from my friends.

Sell your machine in August when theres a shortage of PowerMacs, then get a G5 in September.

sure, the G5 audio demo was cool, but is this really the advice to give out? I mean, that's the same as saying "Even though thousands of audio people use Macs, there isn't a way to make that dual-proc Mac beat that PC. You wasted your $15,000 and there is no relief in sight until September. That is, if you're lucky enough to have a G5 order somewher near the front of the line." What a depressing welcome for a switcher.

Isn't there an audio person who knows where this guy's system bottleneck is? I'd hate to think this is the best that can be done.

after giving some thought on the bottleneck issue, it's probably the 167mhz bus. on my 2.6ghz pc's i was running a 533 bus and a benchmarks for (whatever they're worth) the throughput on the drives was between 76 and 82mb/s. my friends rig is on a glyph firewire 400 and my mac is on an 800 tranny so hopefully that will help.

i realize we are talking apples (no pun intended) and oranges here, but people have been ragging my ass for years to go mac and i finally have, i am the first to to admit i am totally ignorant on it's inner workings, whereas with the pc i am very (beyond anything i ever wanted to be) familiar. the problem is that, this is how i make my living and my 53 yr. old brain is running out of free space to fill without losing something in return. i know i'm married but, i can't remember her name...thank god for the words honey and dear).

anyway, i do appreciate whatever help...if any comes my way and a safe and happy 4th to you all.
