iTunes problems with clarity of still photos!

I've been taking pictures of my daughter's soccer practice and games with hopes of creating a photo/video montage of their season. For the first time, I tried creating a slideshow in iMovie b/c of its superior handling/manipulation of music. It became clear to me that the photos will not show with the same quality as the slideshow option in iPhoto.

Why do the photos look so grainy and out of focus? From within iPhoto, they look great. I'm very disappointed. The Ken Burns Effect, though cool, does not result in clear pictures either (in iMovie). I can not create and distribute to the families of the players a slideshow/presentaton with such poor graphics?

Is this a normal effect of photos in iMovie? I read somewhere that it is. Too bad.

iMovie is used for editing NTSC video, which has inherently much lower resolution than your camera is able to capture. Moreover, iMovie displays its video at a lower resolution on your computer screen than it actually is. To see what your iMovie footage actually looks like, you'll need to play the video back on an NTSC monitor (that's a TV).

You can hook a TV up to your Mac via a DV camera or analog to DV converter, and set iMovie up to display externally. This will allow you to see your iMovie at its true resolution, which is probably not as bad as you think it is, although certainly not as good as iPhoto's slide show. Unfortunately, if you plan to release a slideshow for viewing on a TV set, you will be limited by NTSC's inherent lack of definition.

You will be surprised how good it will look on a TV compared to your computer monitor. I always am. Burn it to DVD and then watch/distribute it.

Not necessarily. What you see in iMovie now is a low resolution display of video in the DV format. DV is processor intensive to fully decode and play back, so iMovie defaults to a low-res display. Your actual video data is full resolution, as you'll see by connecting a hardware decoder (DV camera or analog to DV box) and NTSC monitor (TV).

If you export to a QuickTime movie with the right settings, you should get a decent looking image. The trick, of course, is finding the "right" settings for the exported clip. If you are exporting for email using iMovie's email setting, you'll get a rather disappointingly small, grainy and jerky picture. It will probably look worse than your current picture. This is because good looking video tends to require larger file sizes than most people want in their email. I'd suggest not using email as a distribution method for your videos. Try a CD or DVD and you'll be much more satisfied with the result.

If you want a decent QT movie, try exporting 320x240 pixels using the Sorensen 3 codec at full frame rate. This will not be a small file, but it should be fairly decent looking.
