Palm Tungsten T3

Hey gang, what are your thoughts on this handheld? Looks pretty sweet and the landscape mode is awesome to have if you're going to work on spreadsheets in documents 2 go.

Only downside I can think of is battery life.

Makes a great companion with a G5.

So what are your thoughts?

I am actually looking at one of the T3s, what have you heard about the battery life? I know with that display and the 400Mhz processor you will probably be charging it every other night, thats the reason that I sold my hp 5455, and went back to a Palm CLIE, charging every night sucks.

Re: Palm Tungsten T3
go to www.pdabuyersguide.com... they have great, in-depth reviews about all the pda's... including the 3 newly released ones from palm... they even mention about the battery life on the t3 not being the best... obviously because of the larger display and the 400mhz processor...

Re: Palm Tungsten T3
About the Trio 600, IT HAS NO BLUETOOTH!

In this day and age, I find this very unforgivable. Does anyone know if Bluetooth can be added through an SD card or something?

Re: Palm Tungsten T3
If the Tungsten had phone capabilities, I'd be all over it. But with Palm acquiring Handspring in the next month or so, the products would compete with each other.

Re: Palm Tungsten T3
hi

maybe slightly off topic, but does anyone know how to playback mp3 files on tungsten t (the first generation)? is installing the realplayer enough? and these upgrades in the os from t to t3, is it something significant worth upgrading? is it upgradable after all?!

thanx

I agree, it's really silly that the Treo 600 doesn't have Bluetooth. It does have an SD slot and Palm sells an SD/Bluetooth card (which hopefully should be compatible).

Just got my T3 - superb PDA. In reply to the MP3 issue, you just drag the MP3 onto the "Send To Handheld" application. When you next sync it's automatically moved to the SD card in the palm (MP3's have to live on external memory not internal).

Re: Palm Tungsten T3
Gizzer,

How is the quality of the unit? The fit and finish? I have been debating between the Sony NX73 or the T3. The Sony is made in Japan and the quality is excellent, most new Palms and I believe the T3 is made in China, this is not one of my favorite countries of origin, usually the products are just not up to the standards (Regardless of the engineering) of the U.S., Japan, or even Taiwan.

The T3 pros are:

1. The built in screen switch from portrait to landscape
2. 400Mhz Processor
3. Smaller form factor than the Sony NX73
4. The built in screen switch from portrait to landscape (Awesome feature for viewing digital photos, listed twice because its that great)
5. Documents to Go included
CONS
1. SD card slot only
2. Slider design (flimsy?)
3. No built in backup software

The pros on the Sony side are:
1. Excellent fit and finish
2. Built in ability to back up to Memory Stick
3. I have a Sony PC and Digital camera, both use Memory Stick, easy file transfer and viewing
4. CF card slot is finally usable for other cards
CONS
1. No Documents to Go included
2. Larger size
3. Slightly more expensive
4. No screen switch to landscape

I am only going to use the PDA for some basic Palm apps and viewing digital photos, no movies or games, maybe an e-book.
I am 95% sure I am going to buy a T3 before October 18, Amazon is giving you a $50.00 certificate to use on a future purchase before Dec. 31, 03, if you buy (either unit) from them.

Help

Re: Palm Tungsten T3
Spookily enough, when I was looking to buy the PDA it was also between the NX73 & the Tungsten T3.

First off: The T3 build quality is excellent - no creaks or loose fittings. The slide action is very crisp too. It also feels really nice and compact in the hand and slim in the pocket. When you have it in slider-open mode, the screen seems huge! The screen is also extremely bright and clear (even on half brightness - the default setting - I assumed it was on full brightness when it was first switched on it was that bright).

As to my final decision making: The T3 64Mb & the landscape mode just swung it for me in the end. I really loved the "gadget factor" of the NX73 (especially the UK version with built-in Bluetooth which I would have bought) but knowing the T3 is state-of-the-art with the fastest (400Mhz) processor just seemed too good to pass up. My final theory went that if I'd bought an NX73, I would soon want more memory (built in) and not having the landscape option for web browsing would soon become annoying (more because you know it exists now on the T3 rather than just missing it!).

I reckon by next year sony will have released an NX93 (or something) and will give it a decent amount of RAM and use the now standard Palm API for using landscape mode. But in the meantime you get all the state of the art benefits of a device that is truly pocketable.

Just as an aside - I also played with a UX50 before buying the T3 but the screen is way too small, nowhere near as clear & bright and although a small unit it's still a bit wide for the hands. Also there's no portrait mode.

Hope this makes the decision easier! I've not thought twice about the NX since getting my T3! (I've just installed Salling Clicker too - SUCH A COOL PROGRAM! Browse my iPhoto library on my palm via a live BT link! & display iTunes tracks as well as the cover art!)
