Can't change Macintosh HD icon anymore???

Since I installed 10.1 I've had no problem ever changing the icon for my main HD (Macintosh HD) or any other HD in my machine for that matter...until now.

I rebooted into 9.2 and 9.2 told me that there were problems on disk and it ran the disk repair utility (??) to fix them. Then it rebooted (twice as there were errors the second time, as well) and finally gave me 9.2. I immediately switched back to 10.1.5 and found that my Macintosh HD icon had switched back to the default HD icon. I tried to copy another icon into it's Show Info window to no avail.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I want to put my cool icon back.

Have you logged out and in again after pasting the icon? I seem to recall that that might make the new icon show up, but I thought it was only pre-10.1.5 that had the problem.

If you Show Info on your hard drive, what does the ownership and permissions bit look like?

I run 10.1.5 and had the same problem. What I found, is that I needed to restart both my iBook and iMac to get the new icon to show up (after pasting). It has stayed on both computers, and has not changed back to the stock HD icon.

Who is the owner/group of Macintosh HD supposed to be? Mine is showing ??? (2011).

I think that OS 9's disk repair messed it up.

What should the owner/group for Macintosh HD be?

It looks like mine got screwed up as owner is: ??? (2011) or something like that.

The owner should be system and th group should be admin.

If it is showing ???? as the owner I think you should run Apple's Repair Priviliges utility. This will fix not just this but any permissions and owner/group issues with the system.
