Hitachi DVM200a mini-dvds and iMovie

Hi all,

I own a Hitachi DVM200a DVD-Cam which records digital video to mini-dvds in MPEG-2 format. I recently purchased an iMac and want to start using iMovie to work with these movies and burn them to a standard DVD to distribute to family members.

When I insert the mini-dvd, my mac will play the movie clips on it like any standard DVD movie. However, neither iMovie or iDVD recognize the file format. I downloaded and installed the MPEG plugin for Quicktime, but Quicktime will only play the first 20 seconds of each movie and then stop.

Here is what is the listing of what is on the mini-dvd

video_ts.bup
video_ts.ifo
video_ts.vob
vts_01_0.bup
vts_01_0.ifo
vts_01_1.vob
vts_01_2.vob

My question is what do I need to do or buy to begin working with these movies in iMovie? Help.....

Thanks
Allister

Put simply, It's not very easy to get these files in a condition so that iMovie can work with them. Once you get them in such a condition, It's likely that they won't look very good.

What you need to go is demux the files on the DVD, get the audio and video back together in the same movie, convert it to DV and then open it in iMovie. There have been a number of threads on this forum that have detailed various applications that will allow you to do these things. Search this forum and search VersionTracker for words like "demux" and "DVD".

You'll have much better luck using iMovie with a DV camera.

I thought I read somewhere that the slot loading Superdrives can't read the mini CDs and mini DVDs.... but the other drive can't burn DVDs.... maybe you've had different luck?

I think, I would try riping it with oSEX. It's a freebie, very small app and it demuxes as it rips ( under one of it's many options )
