New 15.4" Screen Resolution

Hi,

I am just wondering what would be the screen resolution of the new 15.4" powerbook. I hope they bump up the resolution as they are way behind PCs which are up to 1920x1200. Specially when apple is getting the new 15.4" from the same manufacturer (Compal) that sells their 15.4" 1920x1200 screens to pc vendors like Dell, etc. Compal offers a 15.4" 1680x1050 version as well. I mean this is the only area where apple just doesn't seem to get it. I know a lot of pc people who are just waiting to convert as soon as apple gets it together for the screen resolution. I mean I know it makes the product expensive and all that, so make a version with a higher resolution and charge more for it. I am sure people will buy it. Specially hard core gamers and film and effects people.

Re: New 15.4" Screen Resolution
Hardcore gamers? I don't know of very many laptops that can take a modern FPS at UXGA resolution (1600 x 1200). According to Barefeats, a dual 2.0 G5 running a Radeon 9800 Pro can barely handle Unreal Tournament 2003 at XGA (1024x768), let alone a resolution that requires more than twice as many pixels to be pushed around. Granted, Unreal Tournament benchmarks aren't completely accurate, but you get the picture. Future games will demand even more processor and graphics card horsepower, not less.

In addition, if gamers were to use a laptop for hardcore gaming, then they should be happy that XGA is pretty close to native resolution- minimal downsizing or interpolation, resulting in better image quality. I cringe at the thought of forcing a Powerbook to play something graphics intensive at full resolution- possible on a 12", practically impossible on a 17".

As for film and effects people- that I can understand- where a large screen is desireable, and instantaneous response is not necessary.

Even in this day and age, it is still necessary to have a desktop machine for the most hardcore amongst us.

The think before you speak thing is his signature, thats all, it wasn't aimed at you but instead shows up in all posts. I'm pretty sure you are still friends.

Yep, Maqi, that's just a signature that we've become used to around here.

But, seriously, aliasfox, you really should consider changing it into something a little less confrontational. I know I did.

Re: New 15.4" Screen Resolution
could you point us to the info you must have seen that suggests apple is going to release a 15.4" laptop? i remember there was speculation about that for the newest revision of the 15" powerbook, but it turned out false info. hmmm?

Those are old articles from June where the rumour mill was going crazy about the updated powerbooks, none of them proved to be true

Re: New 15.4" Screen Resolution
Well, resolution refers to the number of pixels present on a screen- therefore, the 17" has higher resolution than the 15", but because the pixel density is roughly equal, an image on the 15" would appear roughly the same size as on the 17". I'm not 100% sure if that counts as dot pitch though.
In reality, those ultra-high resolution screens are not at all impressive in my opinion. A friend of mine has one of the highest resolution Dells (1920 x 1200... a Dell Inspiron 8500, I believe), and he sits about 8 inches away form his screen to read normal sized fonts. I realize there are programs and settings that can compensate for this, but it's still somewhat of a nuisance (such as webpages that defy logic and settings and appear too small anyway)
I remember Apple was thought of as mad for releasing a 12" notebook with an XGA screen.

As for my signature... it hasn't changed in over two years, and hopefully people will see the smiley face at the end .

Re: New 15.4" Screen Resolution
Yes, it is from the old rumor mills, that actually were true. It turns out that the new AL books were supposed to have the new 15.4" screen but Apple wasn't able to secure enough of them to meet production. So, they gerry rigged the old 15.2" screen into the machine by using spacers that caused the white spot phenomona. Perhaps the new generation due out next spring will have the (slightly) larger screen.

Re: New 15.4" Screen Resolution
I really have to disagree about the resolution thing.

More is definitely better. More DPI raises the clarity of the screen.

I realize it's a function of the condition of one's eyes, but mine are great, I've got the cash, gimme the hi-res screen!! For those whose eye's aren't as good/don't have the cash, make the lower-res models as well.

Not to mention, I don't really think any other OS is as well-suited to having those hi-res displays as OS X. You can smoothly scale up and down with no distortion of the fonts. Try that in windows! It just doesn't work. I have a Dell Inspiron with the 15" 1400x1050 display. It's razor sharp and I don't have to sit 8" from it. I've seen the 15" 1600x1200 screens as well, and while the fonts are a bit small, I didn't have to sit 8" from that either. But changing the fonts is a pain. It never goes well, stuff gets all wacked and misshapen (and I'm not talking about the change that happens when you change resolutions). Not on OS X. Just move the slider, and it goes well.

Man, just do it already Apple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: New 15.4" Screen Resolution
To me it's not just screen clarity, but higher resolution means more places to put the ever multiplying palettes and getting to see more simultaneous but different view windows of documents where it's useful like Word and Photoshop. And you're right. OS X has the only screen display model that can do it right today.

Higher resolution smells like one of those special topics that some Mac users insist they don't want or need, like the old "how about convenient ports on the front" or "who needs a command line" debates, but once Steve makes the big change, some of the same people start gushing "oh happy day, can Apple be any more brilliant in their customer-focused insights?" even though Apple is actually being late to the party.
