Re: New 15.4" Screen Resolution
"think before you speak. if you can't think, please, don't speak"
Wow!... some emotions out there.... My dear friend, my deepest and sincere apologies. In all honesty, I certainly did not mean to offend anyone. I think my choice of words (hard core gamers) was definitely not appropriate, I guess I have been reading a lot of industry magazines, etc., that i need to cut down on....
I think you are right about the gamers part but as far as film or video, just a physically large screen is not the only thing that an effects artist/designer/editor would need in a display. The resolution of the screen is very important and so is an instantaneous response. In case you are wondering, at home and in my professional life, I have always used macs and have always preferred them over anything, and have only incorporated a pc in my work flow when there was no other choice.
Now that I am done trying to re-establish my loyalty to macs, I will get into the problem that I am facing now. These days I am in need of a workstation class laptop on which I can run a compositing/effects and and an editing application. I am willing to take a hit on the speed and the system bus bandwidth (a spec specially cruicial to overall video work flow) as I always have (at least in the last few years before G5), but when it comes to the screen resolution, it needs to be more than 1280 x 854 for what I need to do on the machine. And its just frustrating to know that my options top out at 1280 x 854, unless I become a traitor (imagine how would I be treated than) and purchase something like a Dell M60. And as far as the 17" powerbook goes, a: it is just too big to carry around in a plane, etc., and b: in reality, its not any higher resolution than the 15". The 1440 x 900 pixels of the 17" are the same size as those of the 15", there are just more of them in the 17" and therefore the 17" screen covers a larger physical area. Well, I guess you can just keep adding more pixels of the same size and you can get yourself a really high screen resolution except that it would just be the size of a video wall.
So, you get my point my friend. I hope now you understand the problem that I am in right now for my decision to buy a laptop. I say to apple, spit out a couple of higher screen resolution versions along with the standard rez and just MSRP them accordingly. Trust me, people have the money, they will buy it. Specially in the professional area. I myself am about to shell out about five grands for a laptop. Things are changing at a very fast pace, atleast in the business I am in. I have seen Avid (a de-facto current industy leader in video editing apps) start out with macs, leave macs, come back to macs, and now again I am hearing rumors that they are re-considering their presence on our beloved platform.
I am just trying to be realistic....I just hope you understand how I feel.
....so are we friends again?
