Help!! OS X Suddenly Crashing a Lot!!!

I have had no problems at all up to this point (Have had Jaguar since it came out). Now, after I downloade the latest version of Safari and the OS X update, my computer is crashing several times a day. It only happens when I am cruising the web, regardless of the browser. it locks up my Mac terribly. Nothing responds. Nada!!

Any suggestions, comments, solutions? Please help! I've been SO happy with OS X, but this is bad. By the way, I have an 867 TiBook with IGB of memory.

thanks in advance.

Juan

Same problem here. The other day it crashed 3 times in one day. Once it crashed while I was showing someone iTunes. This only started this last week...

I wouldn't dream of suggesting that you try repairing permissions (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility), because I get in trouble with d00d everytime I do. But it's helped me in the past.

I did that when the problems started (it was also slowing down), the computer is running a lot faster but it still crashes just as often, just does if faster.

But did you repair permissions? You said you installed something, and that sometimes changes them -- not always to the better. Use the Disk Utility in your Applications folder, not the CD.

Have you tried creating a new user and logging in on that account? (This would localize the problem to your other user's preferences.)

Which version of Safari are you trying to use with Jaguar?

Re: Help!! OS X Suddenly Crashing a Lot!!!
I have run Repair permissions (and let me tell you, it found a LOT of errors) when my hard drive suddenly became read only for some reason, and DIsk Utility as well. The Mac is running faster, but its still crashing a lot.

I haven't yet tried logging in as a different user though. However, theres no specific thing I do that makes it crash, so its hard to recreate. Sometimes it gets stuck when i click on finder- once it crashed when i clicked on iTunes- and another time with Mail- and once with Safari.

Sue's suggestion (and Rob's Mac Maintenance 101) is good in cases like this. Establish a new user and see if the problem continues. If it doesn't, then it's most likely isolated to something in your original User folder, such as a corrupted preferences file. Try it and see.

safari 1.2 requires os 10.3 (panther). says apple. that sounds like it might be the problem.
