What is Demux?

I saw this in the unofficial imovie FAQ and it indicated that you have to use a software to demux a dvd. What does it do to the DVD file?

Re: What is Demux?
De-mux refers to mpeg files. Many mpeg files are multiplexed (aka muxed). This means that the video and audio tracks are combined (I don't know the details to this).

Since DVD files are mpeg2, the files on them may be muxed. De-muxing a file means that you separate the audio from the video and you have 2 separate files.

Re: What is Demux?
Use MPEG2works to demux you video. This program is a $10 shareware - but it's probably the best $10 you'll spend - if plan on doing any work w/ video and audio.
