Converting PC database to Mac

I have a database created in Microsoft Access 2000 which catalogs a private library of 848 books. Is there a way to convert this into a Mac file that can be used in Appleworks or any other Mac application?

Can you export the table as an Excel file? I believe Appleworks can import an Excel file.

Re: Converting PC database to Mac
You are running Access 2000, what version is Excel on the Windows machine? Also, if you are doing it on a machine with Access XP (or properly 2002) as opposed to Windows XP (it's difficult to tell when you just say XP), then you will find that you can't do it. MS changed the underlying engine from Access 2000 to 2002, and while 2002 will open Access 2000 files, it doesn't necessarily work the other way.

If it is a table in Access, rather than export, try this way: open the Access table, copy all (click box in the upper left corner, to select and then copy), then go to Excel and Paste Special (text).

If that is a problem, then open Excel on the windows machine, and create a query based on the Access file. Data > Import Data > New Database query, and follow the wizard through the steps. Be sure to save a separate copy so that it is not still linked to the database when you bring it onto the Mac - it "should" work, but having worked in this area for a while, "should" and "will" are two different things.

FileMaker and Appleworks will also import tab and/or comma delimited text files. This is a fairly common way to export database files, and I'd think that Access would support that. Might see if that's easier than trying to get it to Excel.

This sounds like your problem is totally related to the versions of the software that you are using. Comma delimited export is the way to go, IF your current version of Access supports it. BUT...this was NOT supported in the older versions of Access.

When I migrated my company from PC's to Apples, we did have to do some data re-entry in Mac that we never got transferred over properly from the Access Files, although for the most part, importing to FileMaker went smoothly.
