1 iPod, 1 Mac and 1 PC

A friend of mine has a third generation iPod and had been using it with my Mac to load songs onto while he waited for his new PC complete with USB 2.0. I know you can use your iPods on multiple macs, but can you use one iPod on both Macs and PCs? Once he configured his iPod to the Windows version , will the iPod still be compatible with my Mac? There has been alot of trouble when we've tried to go between the two computers... huge inconvience! Any insights?

Yes the iPod will be fully compatiable between PCs and Macs. What problems are you having? Make sure you turn off update automatically or the iPod will erase your friends music and put your library on it when you connect it to your computer. You have to manage the libraries manually.

You want the iPod formatted on your PC, not you Mac. Pcs cant read Mac formatted iPods. Macs can read both Mac and Window formatted iPods. So you want your iPod formatted on the PC.

That message you have to manually unmount the iPod is a normal message when you choose to manually update the iPod. It means you have to unmount/eject the iPod before disconnecting from your computer or you may lose data. There is an eject button in iTunes. Also you can right click on the iPod icon in iTunes or on the desktop or in Explorer on Windows and choose Eject. This is no big deal.

See if it helps after formatting the Pod in Windows and let me know.

I use my iPod on both my Mac and my PC--I originally formatted it in PC format, and it works like a charm on both.

The only side effect is that you won't see the nifty iPod icon on the desktop of your Mac--it'll just be a generic drive.

Can't you just Get Info on the generic drive icon and change the icon to an iPod icon.
It should remember it every time you connect your iPod.
