No Panther for me.....yet.

Curious to know how many people out there have not upgraded to Panther yet. I am still on the last version of Jag and felt the new features of Panther are not worth the cost for me, but my real reason may just be that I am on a G3 ibook 600 with HD space that is not that plentiful and I think the upgrade would cripple the machine. I have alot of MP3z and photos on my machine and the G3 processor speaks for itself in terms of ability to cope with the new OS.

Don't get me wrong, I love my G3 ibook, but I am just curious if people have not upgraded for either the same reason (cannot justify the cost) or feel as though Jag is good enough for their needs.

I plan to get the new eMac with the superdrive or the 12" powerbook sometime this year, but that's another conversation...

Actually, Panther would offer a very notable speed boost to your machine, far from crippling it...

I would second that - I'm running a G3 400 B&W at work, and Panther actually made it seem fast. No problems with the upgrade, either, after I repaired permissions before and after the installation. I'd go for it, if I were you.

Jag is a sweet OS - no doubt.

But ..... 10.3.3 is better.
Make the switch - you'll never look back.

Installing Panther on my housemate's iBook G3/700 resulted in a noticable speed increase over Jag.

when Panther OSX.3 first came out I found alot of teething problems but now it's very sweet, I will not be getting Tiger OSX.4 untill it has reached the same stage as Panther,

I have an iMac 600MHz G3 and apart from the cute quartz stuff the fast user switching and a host of other things are worth the money. I only have a 40 GB Hard Drive (And when you get your iSight Camera you get the Full Version of iChat for free).

Re: No Panther for me.....yet.
my ibook G3/600 DVD (640MB RAM, 40GB HDD) experienced a nice speed up from panther.
ok, it does take up a bit more hdd space, but IMHO every single bit is worth it. And you can make it leaner by not installing all the possible languages, printer drivers and additional voices.

Panther gave even a nice boost to my old iMac G3/400 DV (384 MB RAM)

Re: No Panther for me.....yet.
using macstumbler without any problems ( but i have never tried it on Jaguar).
my guess would be that for most other "non-standard" apps there are already Panther versions out or the old ones work without any problems....but you might want to look at the appropirate websites to make sure, since this is just a guess
"standard" apps shouldn`t present any problems...

I haven't experienced any bugs in Panther. None. Works flawlessly. And panther will speed up your G3, it won't slow it down (I know loads of people have said this, I'm just adding more emphasis. Yeah, we know it from experience, not from anything it says on the box).

Re: No Panther for me.....yet.
When I first upgraded to Panther I was running a G4/450/Cube/20 gig partitioned. Startup time was immediately cut by two thirds, and other things seemed snappier too. The 3 updaters since have just sweetened the milk. Best OS on the planet, ever. Hands down.

I also saw an increase in performance after upgrading from Jag to Panther, and the time that I have saved using Expos is worth the price of admission alone.
