Personal File Sharing Speed

I recently began transferring files with another MAC user. We are both connected to the internet via cable modem. We have successfully established drop boxes for file transfer between one another. Unfortunately, the transfers are slow. About 12-15kb p/sec. Is there any way to speed up this process? I am connected to a router, but I have opened the required ports within the router for personal file sharing. NOTE: when in the same location, we can connect both computers to the router. The transfer speeds are almost 2 mb p/sec. But when in different locations, it slows to 12-15 kb. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Snowak

Download speeds on cable broadband are tremendous. Upload speeds are another matter, and I believe that's where the problem lies. Not much better than dialup, unfortunately.

Re: Personal File Sharing Speed
That's right Grant. This is actually intentional on broadband carrier's part. The huge majority of users don't need a lot of upload speed as about 99% of their transfers are downloads instead of uploads. To that end, the connections are made asymmetrical (fast download, slow upload). This way, they can dedicate more of the bandwidth to what really matters to most users, their download speed, making the connection faster than if it were even upload and download.

Re: Personal File Sharing Speed
All true, but 12-15kb/s seems oddly slow to me. My DSL, for example, is subscribed at 1.5Mb/s down, which I often exceed and typcially get at least 1300-1400kb/s. My uploads are supposed to be pegged at 256kb/s, and I usually get very close to that (typically between 190-230kb/s).

FTP is a viable option, but it requires setting up an account for your friend unless you trust him with your password. You might also think about using AIM file transfers through iChat or AOL's client.
