Help... i'm still trying to figure some things out

hi!
i got a new Mac Powerbook G4 with mac osx 10.3 on it... i'm a new mac user and i'm pretty close to getting it figured out... i just can't find a basic word processor and my mom is freaking out about it... "i can't believe you bought an $1800 laptop and there's no software included! blah, blah, blah....." anyway, i know there must be a basic word processor but i can't find it... (i'm still pretty stupid when it comes to macs... sorry.) i'm learning though! where is the basic word processor and what's it called? (or are there more than one?) i asked a friend and he said i should have AppleWorks... i know what that is because my high school used it. i just can't find that... is it anywhere on my system?
Thank you!

Appleworks isn't included on Apple's pro line of computers (Powerbook, Powermac).

You can use TextEdit, but it's barely a word processor.

Microsoft Word is popular for Macs. Appleworks is fairly inexpensive. There's also OpenOffice which is free if you're willing to deal with a somewhat involved install.

The iBooks ship with Appleworks included, but the Powerbooks do not. It is a $79 purchase from Apple. You do have TextEdit, which will work with plain ASCII text or RTF formatted text.

There are also free options available - OpenOffice for one. AbiWord will run in Apple's X11 and can be installed via the FINK package management system. OS X can also run LaTex editors like Lyx (Lyx is actually available as a native carbon app). Check out the editors and word proccessors available at versiontracker.com and macupdate.com

Just some links to get you going:

OpenOffice and the OS X OpenOffice page (note they mention XFree86 as required, but Apple's own X11 works fine).

The Lyx for Aqua page

The AbiWord home page, and FINK for installing it (you'll also need X11)

WordPerfect Mac v.3.5e (I think that's the designation) is also still available, and is now free. Here is a source for it. Edit I should point out that this is an OS 9 and earlier application -- it will have to be run in Classic.

TextEdit. It's sort of a cross between WordPad and NotePad on Windows.

AppleWorks comes on iMacs, eMac, and iBooks. TextEdit comes with every Mac.

If you're a college student, I highly recommend getting Microsoft Office for Mac with education discount for a really low price from Apple's store.

I've always just gone with MS Office. The education edition (avail to everyone) is $150, but you get Word, PPT, Excel and Entourage, plus guaranteed compatibility.
