General OS X question

Hi,
I wanted to find out how to see what is taking up all my hard drive space. Or to see what Applications are hogging.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: General OS X question
A better explanation please. Do you mean that your hard drive is almost full and you don't know why? Or do you mean how much memory (RAM) is being used for what purpose? If all you want to find out is how big something is, just click on it and type Command I to bring up the item's Info window.

Re: General OS X question
the easy way would be to go to your applications folder, select view as list (from the view menu), then choose "show view options" and check "calculate all sizes". then click the heading of the size column to sort by size.

Re: General OS X question
Fastest way to do this in the finder is:
Use the "find" application, select:

Kind is application

click the "+" sign to add

size is greater than

choose 1000KB (as an example, you could choose higher if you are not concerned with smaller apps.)
Then just make sure the size column is showing.

I always found that OmniDiskSweeper was the best tool for such a job.

I just tried Scope's method and it worked flawlessly, including the sort by size thing. I had no idea this capability was built in, and it's great!

Really Grant? That surprises me, being a Forum God and all ...
I've used that method for checking what's what ever since OS 8 (or somewhere thereabouts).

guy -- applications may not be taking up the most HD space. Better to start your investigation from the root drive.

Re: General OS X question
this is true. applications don't usually take up much space (except adobe, microsoft....). if you start from the root of the drive, and go to list view sorted by size like i described above, you can use the little triangles at the left to toggle open folders. then the contents of that folder will show up in list view, sorted by size. that way you don't have to go through the whole rigamarole for each new folder you open.

Re: General OS X question
You may try WhatSize.

It does pretty same thing as OmniDiskSweeper, but for free.

Re: General OS X question
Well, perhaps "no idea" was going a bit far. I knew the capability was there to show file/folder sizes, and that most of us leave it off as it is by default because it takes system resources to do that. It just hadn't occurred to me that one could also sort them by size. That's a really neat feature when the time comes that you need it.
