Is now a good time to jump in?

Hi all, My old Dell is dying fast and, I'm just itching to be on a Mac again. I may be able to hold out a month or two until my machine kicks it. So my question is, is now a good time to jump into the world of new Mac hardware or would I be wise to hold off at least until after Macworld SF? I'm still debating Powermac vs iMAC choice and like them both. So, do I jump on an Apple-Store refurb deal now or wait a bit?

Both or maybe neither. Usually if anything is going to happen it will happen then.

Re: Is now a good time to jump in?
basically the same as in PC world (but here it is almost every day). As we are soon in January it would be "foolish" (unless the need is there not to wait and see what is coming. Sometimes they introduce new inner details and I have once experienced buying a Nubus card Mac while eveything went to PCI 3 months later...
Some follow rumour sites like http://www.macosrumors.com/
and they can be entertaining (sometimes even little right, see the latest Apple lawsuit against leaks) note taht they only are rumours.
If they come out with a new specced machine with a lot of ooomph, you might also have to wait for it (availibility has sometimes been Apples weak point..)so...
Ahhh the "good" old days when Apple intoduced models once a year....

good luck and remember that whatever advice you will get on this it will be a good guess.
Most people speculate in new Powebooks but Apple may (and have done in the past) advertised one product as a biggie and then just a couple of weeks afterwards announced upgrades on some others

In reply to:

Is that because you expect new or updated hardware, price drops or both?

Both, AND we're going to find out the info about the next version of the Mac OS (10.4) being released mid-next year.

Speculation includes:

1) Dual 3 GHz PowerMac G5, promised for six months ago but instead it was only released at 2.5 GHz then.

2) Faster PowerBooks, POSSIBLY G5, or much faster G4's.

3) Dual core G4's, low-power G4's (10w), and/or 2 GHz G4's, have all been worked on by Motorola in the last few months, and we're hoping to see something about it.

4) More info on Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4), possibly a release date, mid-2005.
