Newbie looking for a laptop...

Hello all;

Just joined and am seriously considering a laptop computer to replace my G3 tower, which replaced my iMac blue, which replaced my PC (thank God!).

Here's my situation: I like the portablilty of the laptop, and the versitility that brings. I'm using the computer for basic word processing, I already know I need Office for Mac to make transfering files easier for my colleagues. I'm a new music teacher, so being able to do rudimentary CD editing of recorded student performances as well as DVD editing is a plus, but not vital. Also, being a musician, my music catalogue is extensive, and I've got the 20GB iPod for that. I'll also be using notation software like Sibelius for my students.

I'm pretty sure that I want the wireless stuff, probably with an AirPort so the wife and I can be connected at the same time. We'll be using the same printer and things like that, so compatability is the most important thing I'll be needing.

I should be able to get student and educator discounts. What else should I need? I've no idea about which laptop to get, which drives to get, what size memory I'll be needing, that kind of stuff. I'd like to have most of my needs met and not need to upgrade for a while.

Can you help me?

You can't beat the 12" iBook at $899 (with edu discount). Upgrade the hard drive to 60GB and get at least 512MB memory from a third party and you're set.

Agreed. The iBook and PowerBook both include the Airport Extreme cards, so all you need to do is buy any 802.11g wireless router (including Apple's Airport Extreme seriously overpriced, Airport Express very cool, or any one from any company. I use a Belkin) and hook that up to your internet line via ethernet and you're set.

And definitely get 512 MB of RAM. 256 is too little.

ALL currents Macs can burn CD's and play DVD's (Combo drive), and if you upgrade to Superdrive you can burn DVD's. BTW iLife '05 will come with it (and GarageBand 2, you'll love it!), and that includes iDVD, so if you have a DVD burner...you'll love that.

I'm on my second 12" PowerBook G4. The first one was with the combo drive. I found after a one year that I would now need a DVD burner, so I got another 12" but with Superdrive.

A while back, you could not get the iBook with the superdrive, now I think you can. I think both the iBook and Powerbook would be just about equal.

Both of the powerbooks that I used with stock memory, worked fine. But I have added 512 to my new book because of home video editing.
