BIZARRE copy/move movie files to external drive

Help.I give up!!!!
I am trying to move some movies onto an external hard-drive but OS-X lies and tells me that it cannot as it says the file name is too long or contains characters, quoting a " Icon" file for each i-movie project (which i can't find in any folder). Any idea what's going on? and how i do move my i-movies? I dont want to share as they end up in uneditable quicktime movies.
Thank you very much. simon in UK.

Re: BIZARRE copy/move movie files to external dri
As said above if the hard drive is not formatted for Mac that will cause problems for any file with non-standard characters like "/" or "*". I ran into the same issue with my external and I just reformatted and all went well going forward. Luckily it was the first time I tried to use it so I didn't have to move a lot of files.

Just highlight the drive icon and "Get info".
