Applications will not quit even through force quite, they stop responding

try'd to get some stuff from software update and the authentication box's little waiting wheel is pulsing as it spins
Tryed relaunching the finder but will not restart

I have done a reinstall keeping network prefrences, but to no avail, any one got any idea's greatly appriciated, I have run cocktail and tryed to run diskwarrior but would not start from the CD

Will it start up from any other CD, such as the System Restore one? It just doesn't make any sense that it won't start up from the DiskWarrior CD, unless you're not giving it ample time (it takes several minutes). If there's an OS X installed on the external hard drive in your sig, you could try installing DiskWarrior there, then using it as a startup device to run DW on your main drive.

Just another thought: Are you having your system sleep in addition to running a screen saver? The two might be conflicting.

All right. Have you tried starting up from DiskWarrior by holding down the letter 'c' key? That's supposed to force your Mac to load whatever CD or DVD is in the tray, if it's bootable. DW is bootable.
