Something similar happened on my 733-mhz G4 QuickSilver (2001), but not after installing 10.3.8. Instead, it happened after (not necessarily because of) running Software Update's Feb. 22 security patch. Another possibility was that while the G4 was in sleep mode during the storm that night, the battery backup system took over momentarily for household electricity.
In either event, when I went to the computer in the morning, its fans were running at full speed but the display would not come to life. I ran force-quit and then was able to access the machine. I launched Repair Permissions but that hung.. Force-quit did quit out of Repair Permissions, but re-launching only resulted in it hanging again. From force-quit, a try to re-launch the Finder failed. And the G4 would neither respond to Shutdown nor Re-start.
I pressed the button below the power button on the G4 tower and that caused a re-start. Repair Permissions worked and found no problems. I then booted into my other drive's 10.3.8 boot volume and ran both TechTool Pro 4.0.3 and DiskWarrior 3.0.2, but whatever had caused the sleep problem had apparently resolved itself with the re-start.
It sleeps on command. It wakes on command. Hey, no problem now, but I remain puzzled.
Respectfully, Norm
