sleep problems

I'm having a problem with Sleep on my system and I'm wondering if anyone knows 1) why and 2) a solution. I'm running 10.3.8 on a G4 Mirror Door dual 867, 1gb ram. When my system goes to Sleep, either by timing out or by me selecting SLeep, two things happen: the hard drive does NOT power down, and it's impossible to wake it up. I wake it up by depressing the power button on the cpu for a few seconds to shut it down, then pressing it again to do a normal start up. I may be mistaken but I think this has only been happening since I updated to 10.3.8. I know I can do a work around by disabling the sleep function but I'd rather get the problem solved than sidestep it. Thanks for any insights tha can be provided.

Re: sleep problems
Something similar happened on my 733-mhz G4 QuickSilver (2001), but not after installing 10.3.8. Instead, it happened after (not necessarily because of) running Software Update's Feb. 22 security patch. Another possibility was that while the G4 was in sleep mode during the storm that night, the battery backup system took over momentarily for household electricity.

In either event, when I went to the computer in the morning, its fans were running at full speed but the display would not come to life. I ran force-quit and then was able to access the machine. I launched Repair Permissions but that hung.. Force-quit did quit out of Repair Permissions, but re-launching only resulted in it hanging again. From force-quit, a try to re-launch the Finder failed. And the G4 would neither respond to Shutdown nor Re-start.

I pressed the button below the power button on the G4 tower and that caused a re-start. Repair Permissions worked and found no problems. I then booted into my other drive's 10.3.8 boot volume and ran both TechTool Pro 4.0.3 and DiskWarrior 3.0.2, but whatever had caused the sleep problem had apparently resolved itself with the re-start.

It sleeps on command. It wakes on command. Hey, no problem now, but I remain puzzled.

Respectfully, Norm

Re: sleep problems
Well, after this last SU, I've finally fallen victim to the "won't wake from sleep" bug - argh! I've now unchecked putting the display to sleep in the Energy Saver pane ... sure hope this will work. Hard boots are not desired.

Re: sleep problems
This can also be a symptom of improperly seated or bad RAM. Had the problem on my 12" PowerBook which was resolved by replacing a bad RAM module.

Re: sleep problems
DPG Guy, I wonder if zapping PRAM and/or re-setting Open Firmware would do the trick? I noticed mentions of these methods working for some people with similar sleep problems. In my case, an abrupt re-start from the programmer button seemed to fix the problem.

Does RAM go bad?

Don't know.

Another thing to try is to trash your com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file in Macintosh HD/library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, log out and in to create a new one, then redo your energy saver preferences.

Re: sleep problems
Peter, what function or functions are governed by the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist? How or where are the settings for this plist saved? Thanks. Respectfully, Norm

Re: sleep problems
Hi Norm,

Apologies for the late reply, been sleeping.

That file contains the preferences you set in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences (when to sleep etc). It's a long shot, but I figure Ryaidy's problems may be a symptom of that preferences file having been corrupted somehow.

Re: sleep problems
Why not just run Preferential Treatment? (Thanks again, Rob).
