Apple settles lawsuit with developer over Tiger leak

Apple Computer on Wednesday settled a lawsuit with one of its developers, Doug Steigerwald, that leaked a copy of Mac OS X Tiger on a file-sharing Web site. Twenty-two year old Steigerwald was one of three developers sued by Apple in December for allegedly posting advanced builds of Tiger on such Web sites. more

Good for them! They got their point across and showed restraint at the same time.

Re: Apple settles lawsuit with developer over Tige
First line doesn't make sense. It should perhaps say:

Apple Computer on Wednesday said it settled a lawsuit with one of its developers,

or

Apple Computer on Wednesday settled a lawsuit with one of its developers,

Fair play to both sides on this one... well done Apple for limiting the amount of ammo used, and well done to the chap for publicly stating his regret in an attempt to warn others of doing this.

Of course, had Apple not sued, I wonder if Doug would have been so quick to realize his mistake.

Rumour SItes
I hope Apple can reach a conclusion such as this with the various rumour sites that is currently sueing. I recognize that there are issues in those that are, perhaps, more complex, but those site suits are similar in that enthusiastic Mac fans did something Apple regards as harmful, but they didn't mean harm.

I have to agree pretty much with everyone on this one. Seems like a fairly amicable outcome. It's too bad that it had to come to this but at least it Apple got its point across without being cut-throat and the young man had the stones to admit what he did was wrong.

Man, I can't read this story without thinking of the book (or movie) "1984." Mr. Steigerwald's confession is eerily and painfully blunt... they must have scared him quite thoroughly.

It would be nice to think he saw the light or found his conscience but your explanation above is more likely than not.

If I had to guess, I'd say his statement was specifically a part of the settlement. It's very carefully worded, certainly not something this 22-year-old came up with on his own, and it serves Apple's goal of discouraging people like him from doing the same thing in the future. That statement was definitely written by the lawyers at Apple and handed to the guy, if you ask me.

Hmm, at least in the case of PowerPage and AppleInsider, the resolution could easily be had. All they have to do is reveal the source of their information and Apple will surely drop the matter with them. In the case of ThinkSecret, it might be more complicated consider they are actually suing as opposed to subpoenas in the other cases.

I don't believe it is likely that this will happen.

"Mr. Steigerwald, if we can't reach an...agreement, you'll never be allowed to use an Apple product again. No Mac OS X, no iPod, keynote speeches from Steve B. instead of Steve J...your life will be as if Apple did not exist. Think of what your choices will be, what meaning freedom can possibly have in such a world."

Apple doesn't control the government...so, I hope we hear the rest of the story when we find out what the government does...and if they go for jail time.
