DVD for Tiger installation needed?

I saw something that said we might be required to have a DVD to install Tiger. I have a 3 year old iMac 600 MHz. I could see buying an external DVD but then again the Tiger might not boot from an external drive... any thoughts?

Re: DVD for Tiger installation needed?
Apple has not announced anything official about Tiger's requirements that I can see. There have been rumors about a DVD being required for installation, but also that CDs will be availalble somewhow. Wait just a bit longer, and we'll all know for sure.

Tiger will boot from an external drive,
and the installer disc(s) almost positively will be able to boot from an
external CD/DVD drive.

Re: DVD for Tiger installation needed?
I wonder if what you've heard refers to new Macs that will come with Tiger? In fact, they're doing that now, that is, all new Macs come with a DVD instead of a set of CDs, because all Macs sold now can read a DVD. I would bet a small amount that the retail Tiger version will still be on CDs though.

no comment..

but the question was if Tiger was on CD.. not DVD. (implied, but it's the way i read it.)
I mean, why buy a DVD if you really don't need it.

does makes you wonder about the future of software from Apple on CD.
my Gnu Macs have DVD installation disks. Panther is retail on CD.
plenty of Classic Macs out there that can run it, even though they don't have DVD capabilities.

Grant:

The rumor is that Tiger will be shipped on a DVD, with "some means" of obtaining the CDs if you need them. At this point, it's just rumor, but that's what the rumor is.

Re: DVD for Tiger installation needed?
And now it's official:

"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesnt have a built-in DVD-ROM player, youll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

From the Upgrade to Tiger page at Apple. And you can't order this version online; you need to download a PDF order form...

Re: DVD for Tiger installation needed?
I think it's such a rip-off that Apple is making everything a DVD install. What's worse is while their saving money (which honestly how much are they saving really?). It's everyone in Apple's base market that has the financial burden. I wrote them a letter (enclosed below):

Apple,

I find it inexcusable that your not only making your loyal Apple base pay $129 for slight upgrades (Panther come on?) within a operating system (OS X) but now with the release of another upgrade (Tiger) your making them not only pay for it, but make it only available on DVD. Guess what? I never got a DVD in my Apple because I don't watch movies on a small computer screen!

To make it EVEN worse, all the poor sods (myself included in this) have to pay YOU $9.95 extra just to get it on CD to install it? It gets even worse! Not only do we have to pay for the upgrade, have it converted (at our expense) but we also have to wait to get in the mail just to mail it back. This is after of course we have to fill a form and we only have till July 05 to make up our minds or be forever shut out on the Tiger upgrade.

What kind of show are you running over there? You know, Microsoft may have their faults but your no better. At least they don't charge for upgrades within a operating system. I think I might just go back to Windows!

disappointed to say the least

Yeah, I pay for the satisfaction of babysitting my installations and swapping CDs.

It's slight, and yet, you still bought it.

Right, because just like CDs are only used for audio, DVD is only used for video.

Re: DVD for Tiger installation needed?
Actually, Rob, one gets to swap his or her DVD for a
set of CDs at that price. One more hassle.
