If there are inventory pileups then why isn't Apple still offering incentives or dropping price?

I think they have pileups of iMacs but would doubt if they were planning on introducing new towers that they would allow inventory to sit.

All we can do is wait and see.

I didn't see that they brought back the promotion.
It just started yesterday. So that could play into your original post that if they have this promotion running through mid August, that maybe they won't have new models at MWNY.

The promotion does though list qualifying models which could also mean they run the promotion on the current models until inventory pile ups run out.

Or they could run the promotion on the old models while still introducing new ones.

It could go either way. We still have to wait and see.

Well, I'm certainly not going to be one of those suckers buying the old models. What I don't understand is, why not simply sell the old models specifically to students? They did this with the dual 533 G4 back in the day. I hope this rumor is just plain wrong because I have been looking to this Macworld Expo for some time and if I don't get to see the computer I will most likely be buying, I'll be very depressed.

I really hope the c|net article is just plain wrong. Nobody wants the existing PowerMacs, all that Apple is going to do if it does delay the new towers release is extend their period of zilch sales for another month and a half. We've seen what's to come with Xserve, why do we want to buy the current lineup when huge performance gains are just around the corner. Could this have all been a ploy to sell tickets to MWNY?

If there are no plans to release new towers at MWNY, what are all these rumors and plans and everything been leading up to.

I think it's reasonable to say that on August 12th, Apple will hold a special event (the rebate ends August 12). Here they will most likely premiere their new PowerMacs. As of right now, the lowest end PowerMac is crap. The mid-range kicks ass, but is a bit pricey. The highest end is a great machine, but it is out of the price range for a good deal of us. They need to either restructure their pricing scheme and just have the PowerMacs on the highest end, or they have to start getting smart. MHz don't matter TOO MUCH, but when people see a difference of over 1000 MHz between a PC and a Mac, it leaves an impression. 1.2 GHz won't help Apple. They need to go MP in all of the PowerMac line, and the iMac needs to take the $1400 - $2000 range. The $2000 - $3500 range will be for the PowerMac. And the $1000 - $1400 range for the eMac. That could work well (but most users will want expandability, like the PowerMac offers). To get back on the subject of no PM announcement at MWNY, my guess is they want to clear their inventory first (sales really sucked for PowerMacs this year). We'll see what the deal is in exactly one week.

I think they should drop the g3 iMac and lower the eMac down into the $799 range. They could have three models: CD Rom for 799, CDRW for 999, and Combo for 1199 (with a bigger hd and more ram, of course).

Then, if the iMac's price is lowered to where it used to be, or if they give us a 17" screen at no to little added cost on the high end, then Apple will be in business--at least for the consumer.
