startup sound question

When booting or restarting my Mac, the startup sound (the "big chord") randomly plays at different volumes, usually either quite softly, or a full volume blast that is really irritating. I've gone into the sound preferences page and set the alerts, etc. to a very low volume, to play out of the computer's internal speaker, but the "output volume" slider at the bottom of the window is "greyed-out" and doesn't respond, same for the little "speaker" icon at the top right of the screen.

I've tried setting it in OS 9 and OSX, same problem in either. It's a dual-bootable G4 1.25 DP, OS 9.2.2, OS X 10.4.2, 2 gigs RAM, etc.

Thanks for any ideas!

Re: startup sound question
No answers? I'm surprised.

My limited experience is that a straight restart from X will
give a more muted startup bong than switching from 9 to X.

I've used "StartupSound" and "TinkerTool Pro" to mute the
startup sound, but it has no effect when moving from 9 to X.

Any help? Probably not.

Re: startup sound question
I don't have that problem with my mac. Normally just turning the volume down before I shut down results in a quieter chime upon boot up.

One thing you could do to avoid the blasting chimes is to use headphones. Plug the headphones in and when you boot up, the sound won't be as loud in the room. This is helpful if the rest of the house is sleeping. Then you can adjust your sound and unplug the headphones.

Re: startup sound question
jnyb,

If I want to bootup my computer and my wife or anyone else is around and I don't want to disturb them I just hit the mute button on my keyboard.

Peter

EDIT) Sorry, I checked on startup and it still chimed with mute.

Re: startup sound question
In the sound prefs window, have you set the sound to come out of the monitors speakers or the internal speaker or the optical out jack?
It should be on the monitors or internal one.

Re: startup sound question
Does the sound card have a control utility. Try putting the output to the internal speaker and see if it makes a difference then change it back.

Re: startup sound question
Have you tried

http://www.mistatree.org/Freeware/Psst.html

Psst! is the ultimate Tool for adjusting the volume of the annoying startup chime or getting rid of it!

Just for my own curiosity if you do try Psst! what do you think.

I've had that problem when I forget to change the settings in M-Audio Delta Control Panel and find the whole house suffer a sound wave shock.
