BAD CD!

Hey all,

I am having trouble with my trusty little powerbook. It seems that a very small percentage of my cd's are...well...not good enough. I have copied about 100 cd's to itunes without trouble, and now I have discovered two discs when inserted spin several times for about a second and then are ejected without even opening itunes. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there any hope for me getting these songs into itunes? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mikay

Re: BAD CD!
Hi
are they commercial CD's or burned ones? that may make a difference.

also, check for cleanliness and scratches. there are several cleaner/restorers available from Rat Shack/WallyWorld/etc that would help you in this endeavor should that be your problem.
computer player/recorders are sometimes alot pickier about the diet you feed them.

just some thoughts
luck

Re: BAD CD!
follow nukes advice and check if they are copy protected (should read on the cover). If they are you could return them to the store (as Celine Diones CD that was returned en masse in Germany as it could not play in some CD players).

Also try another Mac/PC and see if they can read them

Re: BAD CD!
What drive are you using? Check by clicking on the blue apple, about this mac, more info, and then click on ATA or disc burning.

I had that problem with my iMac G5 were they just got spit out, they aren't copy protected near as I can tell, and for some reason they worked with my iBook G3 I can't figure out what the problem was.

Re: BAD CD!
I have a working theory that Matshita drives just are really horrible. More on that later. My campus bookstore is gonna pop in a new drive next week, and we'll see how that works.

Apple says these things pass their standards, so they won't do anything about it. That's fine, but their standards suck. Our $$$ computers should read ALL CD's.

Re: BAD CD!
i just came across this same problem this weekend for the first time with a disk. didn't work on on my tiBook, or a friend's aluminum one either. i know for a fact the disk is not copy-protected, and it's very clean and scratch free. i think i'm going to bring it to work and see if it works on a pc.

i'm stumped (and annoyed)

Re: BAD CD!
I share your opinion of the Matshita drives. Even with minimal dirt and wear problems with older CDs, like the kind one would find in my college radio station, my PowerBook will freeze iTunes on an import. I repeat that these problems are minimal, nothing that another brand of drive or a halfway decent error correction feature could blow past without any issue whatsoever.

Re: BAD CD!
I'm tempted to buy either one of those new Lacie external drives to fix this. I mean, my machine us under warranty, but even if Apple WOULD replace the drive, it'd still be really, really bad.

It'd be nice if for the first run on the MacTel PowerBooks that you had an option to have NO optical drive (to keep costs down) and then just buy a good enclosure with a good drive, etc. I know thats not as convienent, but whats the point of having a crappy internal one?

Re: BAD CD!
just following up.

the burned cd in question imported into iTunes fine. although it was in great condition, it was pretty old (1989 - the modern lovers). i wonder if that had anything to do with?
