Move OS X to a different partition-'drag & drop'?

I have a G4 Quicksilver with 2 harddrives, and 6 partitions total (3 on each drive). The partition that OS X (10.3.9) is installed on is running out of room, so I would like to move the entire disk contents, including the OS, applications, folders etc. to another empty partition. Is this as simple as doing a 'drag and drop' of the Harddrive Icon, or do I need to reinstall OS X on the new partition first, and then move the applications and files individually?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You'll need to use a drive cloning tool to do this. I personally recommend SuperDuper.

Yes you can, and you can also use Disk Utility's Restore function, or another app called CarbonCopyCloner......all work essentially the same in the end. Just be sure to repair permissions before AND after the cloning is complete....

Why do you need to do this?

Doing it before or after should be sufficient even if you are paranoid.

I recommend using Disk Utility though its use is a little obscure.
  • Open Disk Utility.
  • Click on the drive containing your current OS, Apps and Users (This is the source drive.)
  • Choose the Restore tab.
  • Now drag the image of your source drive from the left side to the Source line.
  • Now drag the destination drive from the left side to the Destination line.
  • Click the Restore button.
It will take a while for the copy to complete.
