popping noise

I've got a 12" Powerbook 867 MHz, 640 MB or RAM, running 10.4.2.

Just today I've noticed my mac is making a popping noise, almost like the kind of noise it makes when it wakes up. It happens very sporadically, sometimes 5 or 6 times in 20 or 30 seconds, then other times not for a minute or two. It doesn't seem to be related to any particular app. I don't believe it is a hard drive issue. It sounds more like a power supply issue, or it may be something that is causing the speakers to pop. It's difficult to tell.

I have restarted and it is still happening.

Whatever it is it's got me worried. I'll be backing up soon.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Changes in sound aren't good... but I'm having a hard time figuring out what your "wake-up" noise sounds like.

When my 12" PowerBook wakes up it sounds sort of like a "ka-ching". Mine doesn't come close to making popping sounds ever.

Do you have powered speakers attached to your PB? If so, the connector may be loose.

Re: popping noise
Do you mean "chirping" sound as observed here?

I've never heard POP coming out of a computer before. Can't imagine what would cause a computer to go pop other than something blowing up inside. I had a Cube go FIZZ on me once. That was the sound of the G4 upgrade shorting out the VRM, which was, of course, irreplaceable.

If you're sure you heard a pop and not a chirp, I urge you to shut down the machine and have someone to look at it.

Re: popping noise
I have the same config; 12" 867MHz PB, 640 ram, same popping noise.

I recently had a new motherboard, optical drive installed . Anyway, I hope it is unrelated that my recent service so I don't have to lose my book for 2 weeks again.

This popping noise doesn't sound like the the descriptions the other respondents gave above, my popping noise is more like the pop sound from the speakers when a vinyl record is playing. It is too regular to consider it being random. It is a measured pop - pop, p-a-u-s-e, pop-pop, p-a-u-s-e... continuing for 2 minutes. Most always when waking or starting my computer and only on my 12" 867 MHz.

This does not happen on my wife's 12" 1.33 MHz PB, nor an iMac DV 266 MHz, or iMac LCD 867 MHz (We are a Mac family ; ) All macs have been updated to 10.4.2 and Apple should be commended for having its software OS run on even a lowly 266 iMac.

But this popping sound bugs the hell out of me. If someone knows the answer, please help.

I will try booting in safe mode are restarting and report back here.
