Nit-pick: Isn't Toast on version 7 now? It's too bad they couldn't include that instead, since it looks like a big improvement over the previous version (6).

No, but that's a limitation of iDVD, not the drive.

From what I've read, the difference between 6 and 7 is primarily:

1. Popcorn's functionality was added in.
2. DivX encoding.

Honestly, I don't see it as a large improvement at all, particularly as I already own Popcorn.

I have the Sony DRX720UL/T external burner and I haven't had any issues with it burning discs directly from iDVD via FireWire, and I'd expect this drive to be the same.

... and to that i ask, will it work with Final Cut Express/Pro?

i think it's time for me to go dual layer; anyone know of a good internal as an alternative? When Apple makes it OEM ... you know it's time to upgrade your PM. Still feeling god with my dual 2.5 G5 and even thinking about downgrading to a the new iMac ...

I think you mean DVD Studio Pro -- FCE/FCP is for video editing; DVD Studio Pro is for DVD burning.

I have no way of knowing for sure, because I don't have the Sony drive, but yeah, in general -- DVDSP supports external DVD burners.

Try getting a Pioneer DVRO9 (ack! they've released the DVR110 already)... It's possible that it'll even take the Mac Drive Firmware. My orginal SuperDrive was a Pioneer A01. If I get the chance I'll pull the DVR09 out of my Athlon and drop it in my tower and see if it works....

Check out this article:
http://www.it-enquirer.com/main/ite/more/pioneer_dvr_110/

It's currently $43 at NewEgg

It never ceases to amaze me what people will overpay for......
