Re: Editors' Notes Weblog: The mini stays in the picture
Myself, I liked the original green color - the 2nd gen green is pretty awful IMHO, as are both generations of blue. I had a 1st gen mini, brielfy upgraded to a 30 GB iPod photo, happily, and most recently ebay'd that and got a 60 GB vPod. Wow. It's so much better than the mini (and the photo) that it's not even funny. I can't agree at all with the notion that the space-limitations of the mini somehow make for a better music listening experience. What? I now can't see getting any iPod that doesn't fit my whole music library on it, with the possible exception of the 2GB nano or 512 MB shuffle, strictly for exercise use. The nano is much better than the shuffle in showing track info, but it also costs a lot more, so for such a limited use, I'd probably opt for the cheapest shuffle. I haven't felt like spending even that much, though.

Re: Editors' Notes Weblog: The mini stays in the picture
I recently visited around 10 shops in my area trying to find a Blue 4Gb iPod mini as a Christmas present. I particularly didn't want the new nano as it seems just too small and fragile. I eventually found a national mobile phone retailer with stock - absolutely everywhere else had sold out of minis...

I couldn't agree more. I bought my wife a Pink 6GB mini earlier this year, and I love it. I hope it lasts forever. If I had the money, I'd go get one for myself. The Nano is nice, but it's almost too small. The mini is THE perfect size.

Re: Editors' Notes Weblog: The mini stays in the picture
I would agree that the iPod mini was the most durable of all the iPods ever. It would be nice if Apple came to their senses and made future iPods from the same anodized metal the mini was in, rather than the soft plastic the nano is apparently made of. Somehow I doubt that will happen though.

As for the mini, I've been looking around for a 2nd gen mini or refurbed one from Apple for my wife. She needs something durable, as she tends to be rather hard on electronics. I gave her my original 1st generation 5GB iPod a while back, and she finally managed to kill it by getting salad dressing all over it (don't ask!) It still powers up as far as I can tell from the sound it makes, but the screen is DOA, which makes it kinda useless. If I ever got her the nano, it would be destroyed in a week, so that's out of the question. And she doesn't really want or need the full sized iPods, nor the shuffle.
So I figured I could get her the mini, and it would at least have a chance of lasting a while. But they aren't the easiest to find - testament to their popularity, I'm sure. The list provided in this article is a good place to start though. I hope to find one that fits both budget and taste in that list.

Re: Editors' Notes Weblog: The mini stays in the picture
I paid a visit to my local independent Apple reseller recently and the store manager told me that even after the nano came out and they had it in stock, they still moved roughly 100 iPod minis before they sold completely out of their stock. And while I was there, a customer came in wanting to buy a replacement mini for his daughter, whose own pink model had recently stopped working.

Re: Editors' Notes Weblog: The mini stays in the picture
Your post gave me an idea. Being in NYC, I was overlooking one of the most obvious reputable places to find a mini- Tekserve! I checked their website and they do indeed have 2nd gen mini's in stock, both 4 and 6 GB versions. They're selling them for $199 and $249 respectively. Of course, getting it there I'll pay tax, but it may be worth my piece of mind knowing that I'd get it from a very reliable place. I may stop by there today to see what they've got.

It's amazing. I work in Hospitals around AZ and alot of the anesthesiologists have them especially the mini. They carry that along with a speaker system to play music whenever they are providing anesthesia. It's nice because alot of doctors don't carry music with them or the patients request for a particular type of music to help them relax. The mini is the right size for the OR, although a fullsize iPod is okay too.

Just a note of Thanks
I don't own an iPod mini, but (in the spirit of the season) I would just like to thank you for this FANTASTIC article. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and it made me "lol" at my desk several times. Thanks for keeping my news entertaining!

That does sound innovative.

"Sir, it's time for your anesthesia."
"Are you gonna stick me with a needle?"
"No, sir, we're using the latest technology. Have you heard '101 Strings Performs the Hits of Celine Dion?' "
"Ummmm...uhhh, I never said I was afraid of needles..."
(click)
"You call this music?......Ohhhh...going numb.....losing...all feeling in my...can't...mind getting...foggy...ZZZZZZZ"
"Doctor, the patient is ready for the operation."

I agree with you on the size issue. My mini provides the right
feel for handling and using that thumbwheel. I tried the nanos at the
local Applestore and they felt too small for larger hands. But, since
I'm a TIVO guy I'll probably be uprading to the iPodVideo version
available next year. Get right size, GIGS, color and video.

Loved the article. I still use my original 5g ipod 1st generation unit. It runs perfectly, and will be my pod of choice until it dies.

So the vPod is really that good? excellent. I've been eyeing it not as an iPod replacement (i have a 40Gig) but as a device that I could take on the plane to HI because they show the same movie more than once.

I think I'll still get white though... black smudges too much.

Drivers use the ipod too
I drive for a living and use it to soothe my nerves in traffic.

It's great when you get sick of ``the constant rotation at rock-n-roll stations''- eminem.

They play the same song 6 times within a four hour period.

I'm considering a vPod but will never give up the iPod because I don't need the v-capeability when I'm driving.
