iTunes/iMovie using AAC protected Tunes

I seem to remember conflicting answers on whether you can use songs that you bought at the ITMS within your iMovie and iDvd projects and have them play on home DVD players correctly.

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks

To play it safe I always burn the purchased songs to CD then import them back into iTunes (often times mp3 flavor)-->iMovie-->iDVD...and all view/sounds sweet.

There is no reason it should not work with iMovie 5. If it doesn't you may want to trash your iMovie and iTunes plist. Then open iTunes then iMovie. In that order.

I tested this the morning. You can use iMovie (via the audio tab) to import "Purchased" audio.

I did not try dragging a purchased song to iMovie but assume it would also work.

iMovie does do a DRM authentication before converting the file for use.

Note: You could spend a whole $1 and check my work

Re: iTunes/iMovie using AAC protected Tunes
Well the protected ACC format did not exist when the DVD format came out so... Without actually burning a DVD... I am gonna say it converts it to a DVD standard format.

Oh I have an idea...
Create a SHORT movie with iMovie then add an .M4P (protected audio file) Next create a disk image of that "project" in iDVD. Mount the image file in the finder. If you look in the disk image file you will see the format is now a muxed VOB file. The audio and video have been mixed. PCM stereo.

Re: iTunes/iMovie using AAC protected Tunes
For what it's worth, I burned a DVD last night with a protected iTunes song (.m4p) in it, and I had no problem playing it back on my regular DVD player. This is with the latest version of iTunes and the iLife '05 suite on an eMac with a super drive.

One thing I noticed in working with protected songs in iMovie: if you create a new project in iMovie and add a protected song to the timeline, iMovie will not let you export (via the "share" menu) the song by itself. I suspect this is to prevent people from using iMovie to strip off the DRM features of iTunes. However, if you add a video clip of greater or equal length, iMovie will let you export the combined clip to any format you want.

Re: iTunes/iMovie using AAC protected Tunes
-Rich,
OK...I just created an iMovie film clippings (iLife v4.x) dropping several photos, and using an iTunes AAC purchased song (background music)-->iDVD-->DVD-R->played fine on our Sony DVD Player. So the next time I create an iMovie I won't bother converting the AAC file.

In reply to:

This is very encouraging.

I think so since I've never done it that way in the past. But it kinda makes sense. We can burn Protected AAC iTunes music-->to CD-->play it in cars, home DVD Players, and boom-boxes. So why not iDVD ;-)
