The addition of Showtime programming to the iTunes Music Store lineup moves us one step closer to Philip Michaels’ dream of downloadable HBO shows. more

As more and more shows arrive I'd believe there'd be enough reason to buy an Apple device that is geared specifically for video and not so much for music. Meaning something you would have to hold with two hands and weighs a bit more than you'd tolerate with an music device. Of course, with a larger screen. Everyone can guess the device is coming from Apple as 12 millions downloads is nothing to sneeze at. The only thing the would put the icing on the cake would be a device that's hooked to a 3G network so we may download while on the bus, train, or plane instead of having to pre-pack the device before ones journey.

None of the currently available content really tickles me all that much. What I would REALLY like is stuff from TLC or Discovery. Mythbusters, and other educational and entertaining shows. It'd be great to have episodes of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition available perhaps with parts of the profits going to help fund more builds and more houses for deserving families. I'd also like to see stuff like American Chopper, Monster Garage and such. These are shows that would make it much more of an interest for me to buy video content as well as possibly an Apple media center device. Which i'll buy anyway but that's not the point.

Mythbusters

Appropos of nothing, at last month's Macworld Expo, I was standing in the area at Moscone Center where they corral up all the press-folk before letting us in to Steve Jobs' keynote. And who do you think was standing next to me? That's right -- fellow Macworld editor Dan Miller

Which, uh, isn't very exciting.

But standing next to him was one of the Mythbusters, Adam Savage. Which is much more exciting, at least to me.

My point is that at least 50 percent of the titular Mythbusters seem to like Macs, so I'm sure they'd be thrilled to add their show to the iTunes Music Store. Whether the Discovery Channel shares that thrill remains to be seen.

More to the point of your post, I think we are rapidly moving toward a wider spectrum of available programming. The success of some of the ESPN content, for example, suggests there's more than just a demand for downloads of episodic shows.

There is a new product called iLoad out there that will allow one to record shows to an external firewire drive. Once the show is on the firewire drive, it could be plugged into your Macintosh of choice and the show could be converted for iPod delivery and synced to your iPod. This is a great way to save content from cable channels in digital format, and then utilize for iPod conversion and consumption without having to pay $2.95 or whatever for an episode of Lost, for example.

So why would someone want to buy that show from the iTunes Store?

To recorded you need to have it broadcasted right? So what if you missed the broadcast or you want to see it from the beginning, with your plan you don't have this flexibility, you are still tied to the networks schedule. With iTunes you are good to go.

iLoad apparently schedules the events for recording just like TIVO

"without having to pay $2.95 or whatever for an episode of Lost, for example."

That would be $1.99.

The iLoad looks interesting, we'll see how well it works, how easy it is etc. I don't know how popular it will be since it only records at low resolutions.

The iTunes store is useful for shows on channels you don't get and episodes that have already aired.

Excuse me while this non-American sheds absolutely no tears for your predicament as we have zero content on offer to us at all...

I just wish Apple would hurry up and sort something out with the BBC here in the UK.

Just the other day I was watching some programs from BBC Wales on broadband. Granted these were streaming, but they were streamed on demand last week's episodes. It would have been nice to download them to go.

Clearly, the BBC is interested in media online. They have several podcasts, and practically any radio program is available for 7 days from date of airing as a radio stream. I use Audio Hijack to record about 10 hours a week of programs from the different BBC networks, and then take them on my iPod. We just need to convince BBC that iTunes would be a workable model, perhaps in addition to--not as a replacement for--their present streaming model for TV programs, so as to allow older episodes to be available for purchase.

Oh yeah, and definitely. Please get HBO on board. Please. I'd like to see HBO put all their original series on iTunes.
