Re: PlayStation 3 delayed, to launch in November
I know there are a lot of sony fanboys/girls out there, but this is a long time to wait with the 360 out in full force. I think ony might have dropped the ball here, and their overall market share is going to suffer. Regardless, this thing is going to cost at least $500 (and they'd take a big loss even at that price).

Don't matter much to me anyway, since I'm too excited about a new way to play games (Nintendo). I really could care less how much sweat I can see on the basketball players (Sony - Microsoft).

Re: PlayStation 3 delayed, to launch in November
Hi,

A reported minimum starting cost is $425. That would probably be the basic "core package" pricing as it was with the 360. The only problem I see with that logic is that it sounded like in the linked article that the PS3 is going to require a hard drive. So they will have to have a "core package" with a hard drive at the least, maybe a smaller one.

Everyone that tries to get their hands on one of these before the holiday shopping season will have to had preordered one already or preorder one by today. Most normal folks won't be able to even touch one until 2/2007.

Sony's upper hand is the graphics power. They are going to hope that is enough. Once again I see a problem in that logic considering the system only has 256MB of system memory, half of what the 360 has.

Finally....Microsoft and Sony will fight it out over the pretty/powerful consoles so Nintendo should be able to sneak in there with their (probably) cheaper system and be the second best selling console this time around.

Re: PlayStation 3 delayed, to launch in November
What's funny is I read last week that the Playstation 3 was still on schedule, and expected to be released in the "fall", not the spring. This was from a sony representative, or possibly the president of Sony. So it's not all that much of a surprise, but it seems the net - Press has put the "delayed" monicker on it, and now it's become spun into the fabric of the internets distorted reality. All it really has that is any different is an official month (november) timeframe. AFAIAC nothing has changed because November IMO is "fall".
But what is to bad is that finding the article I read is next to impossible with the barrage of "new" playstation 3 delayed news articles overpowering my searches. I wonder if google has a way to exclude todays news?

BTW - That's great article there Reenee. Sony is answering XBOX LIVE with a Free Service. Kudos go to Sony.

Maybe... the 12-month head start didn't help the Sega Dreamcast all that much, did it?

The question is: how much money can Sony or MS sink into these things?

This was from a sony representative

Don't blame the Sony rep, he was saying was he was told to say.

The truth of the matter is that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are in competition with each other and they have to both lie about their release dates in order to maintain confidence and keep up with each other.

I'm guessing that the distance between the two will be quite close to the originally stated difference. HDD will lead Blu-Ray by a 6mo-1yr. Both are waay behind originally stated dates but by approximately the same amount. (Though I suspect, internally, both knew the stated dates were exaggerated)

Hey where is the guy who always says that Holo-technology is great? Holo-technology is awesome and over half-decade away.

Microsoft has a free service in Xbox Live. The silver package is completely free to everyone with an internet connection and a 360. How do we know if the Sony model doesn't follow the same path? Still not enough details.

You do realize you linked to a report covering that the same conference that Martyn Williams was reporting on, yes?

Yeah and Microsoft can't seem to produce the consoles in acceptable numbers. What are we almost April and you still can't find the console on store shelves. Yeah Sony has nothing to worry about with this delay.

Regards,

I somehow doubt that tells the whole story. The PS3 releasing about a year after the xbox360 with half of the video ram sounds fishy. Especially with the "I have the best graphics hahahah" label that sony is shooting for.

I haven't done my own sluthing so that is all I have to say on that subject...

In retrospect, there were a lot of reasons why the Dreamcast failed that didn't have anything to do with its 12-month lead, and they are mistakes that Microsoft hasn't exactly made with the Xbox 360:

Sega already had a horrible reputation after the failures of the Sega CD and Saturn systems -- developers, gamers and retailers were all a bit gunshy of the Dreamcast. On the contrary, Xbox has made a lot of third party publishers a lot of money.

Developers, in particular, were very concerned about making Dreamcast games, because the Saturn was an utter PITA to program for. The whole point of the X in Xbox was to take a known technology -- DirectX -- and make it easy to program for in a console enviroment.

Neither EA (big in the US) nor Konami (big in Japan) made games for it.

There were few exclusive titles that gamers were clamoring for.

Sega did a pretty miserable job of promoting the Dreamcast.

It didn't help that Sega was bleeding money, either. Sure, Microsoft's entertainment division hasn't made money on the consoles yet, but they can spend a hell of a lot more on it too.

Re: PlayStation 3 delayed, to launch in November
Excellent point. I've been looking for one for months to no avail. Only availability are the core system (which I don't want) and the ridiculous $700-800 bundles that include a bunch of extra crap (controllers, rechargable batteries, remotes, lousy games) I don't want. I'm not sure how much of this "shortage" is artifical and how much is created by greedy retailers requiring these huge bundles. I could walk into a target today and buy a core system.
