Re: Memorex introduces inexpensive 'FlashDisc'
a Marketing solution to a problem that doesn't exist?
we already get much bigger USB2 Flash drives for less money per megabyte.
They work the same.
This is almost as dumb as an Iomega idea.

Re: Memorex introduces inexpensive 'FlashDisc'
I was thinking the same thing! Here's from their website:

In reply to:<hr />
Each FlashDisc can typically hold:
400 documents (average file size 40KB)
10 presentations (average file size 1.6MB)
40 photos (average 3.2 megapixel at 1024x768) or
15 minutes of music (128bps quality audio files)

<hr />

Who has 40k documents? Can word even write an empty file that small?

10 presentations? 10????

I create presentattions that are over a gig in size. Of course, we have to use Macs to run them that big. PC laptops choke on 'em.

40 Photos? It won't even hold a single TIF from my EOS Digital Rebel, or a single RAW file from my 1Ds Mark II.

I haven't seen numbers this fanciful since the last presidental election!

Ah, just as long as you keep counting them you should be able to store more and more files!

Re: Memorex introduces inexpensive 'FlashDisc'
This fills and interesting niche. It's cheap enough to mail a file or two to someone. You might not realize that there's a place for that. It's not about capacity, it's about being expendable. I think they'll sell a lot of them.

I can see the future: hills and hills of FlashDisc piling up alongside mountains of floppy disks.

Re: Memorex introduces inexpensive 'FlashDisc'
I agree, this products is aimed at the disposable crowd, not for the one-thumb-drive-to-rule-them-all crowd. Maybe it will be popular for its simplicity and its built-in case, which allows it to be mailed without extra packaging. The real competitor for this product, though, is not other thumb drives but, rather, CD-R's and CD-RW's. When I want to mail someone files, I burn a CD, which really isn't all that difficult and is considerably cheaper than these FlashDiscs. If you want the media to be reused, just use a CD-RW instead of a CD-R; it's still cheaper than a FlashDisc with lots more capacity.

Still, I can see these guys netting people with no tech knowledge (i.e. who don't know how to burn CD's), and I can see them being sold at Kinko's where someone might want a quick, relatively cheap thumb drive to copy files. But I imagine everyone else will give this a miss.

Why not just e-mail the files, encrypted or otherwise.

Re: Memorex introduces inexpensive 'FlashDisc'
By the time you add the cost of the "disc" and postage, it does not seem all that cost effective.

Brother you hit the nail on the head. If the file is that small, just attach and send it FOR FREE !

IMO, CD-R/RW addresses both issues nicely. They're pretty cheap, too.

Re: Memorex introduces inexpensive 'FlashDisc'
The only use that I can think of for such a small capacity drivce:

If you had to send a file (<16MB) to somewhere that broadband is anavailable (yes there are places like that), AND where CD-Rs would be scrutinized very heavily by customs agents (for pornography of course). You could slip one of these things in to some gift-looking product that also has other plastic tags on them (like a bundle of socks for grandpa back home).

Sounds reasonable.

Re: Memorex introduces inexpensive 'FlashDisc'
I agree with many on here that right now this is not that great of a product BUT is a good idea. CD's are becoming long in the tooth. They take up space and time to burn. I don't use CD-RW's due to the time and cost factor of CD-R's. It is just cheaper and easier to burn a new CD-R but part of me cringes at throwing away so much wasted storage when I only burn 50-100MB.

The problem with these flash drives are the space. In a year or so, we might start seeing larger sizes 256/512/1GB?? for the same price and quantity. At that point it does become much better than a CD. Quicker time to final goal of getting everything portable, smaller size and only slightly more expensive. While this is "dispossable" it is less dispossable than CDs making the product more environmentally friendly. Now, I just toss a CD out after I get the files off it. I would re-use one of these flash drives.

I hope prices drop and Memorex keeps improving the product. They are on the right track, it will just take a while.

<edit> I should have made it clear, that although prices will certainly drop for other flash companies, the key here is selling multiple units for a cheap price. I would buy 3 of these if they were 100MB each. At that point they become comparable to what I normally burn on a CD. I may not ship them off but would work great for around the office.
