Re: unable to install mac os 9
Sounds like it is not booting, correct? Or are you actually trying to install the OS from CD and this is where it is not booting?

In the first case, try to boot with extensions off (depress shift key while booting). If it does boot, your computer hardware is fine but software needs help. Normally, you would want to repair the damage and save files but since it is new to you, chances are that there is nothing on the machine that you care about. In which case, boot from the installer CD, use Disk Utility and reinitilize the drive (choose zerop data option... it would take longer time but better in the long run with a used computer). Now you should be able to install the OS, perform all necessary updates and install other applications.

In the second case, you may have a bad installer disk o ra disk that is not designed for your spcific machine. In both cases you would need to purchase a universal installer.

Good luck!

Re: unable to install mac os 9
I strongly suspect you have neither the retail installer nor the installer specific for your Mac model. For many years installer CDs and DVDs that accompany the computer are crippled. They will not function transparently on all Macs that accept the system you are attempting to install.

Assuming you have run diagnostic software (for OS 9): TechTool 3.0.9, and DiskWarrior 2.1, and further assuming these diagnostic utilities identified no hardware or software problem they could not fix, acquire a retail copy of the Mac OS you want to install. Your problems should be over.

Heather,

Since there are two threads on this, I am going to go ahead and close this one and direct you and other people who would like to read or reply to the other thread here .
