Near Future of PCs

Gates was on Fox tonight talking about various things but one thing he mentioned was the very near future of computing is going to be very different, and he gave specific examples. Am wondering if anyone has an opinion on the near future of desktop PCs. Going away? Just the same but faster?

What were those specifics that you mentioned?

I came across that program but the interviewer seemed so sycophantic that it turned my stomach.

The only change I've heard from MS was their desire to change the software model from license to subscription based. The only reason they want that is to maintain a revenue stream.

They also want to change to a web-based applications model, so you will have NO CHOICE but to pay them a fee every time you use MS OFFICE to create/send/print/save a letter, email, spreadsheet, web page etc etc

That was the underlying REAL reason for the .net framework initiatives, but look where that lead

greedy bastards suk!

Now wait a minute, Bill Gates. The near future of computing will be very different? Wow, what a revelation Bill! Ironically, the only way the very near future of computing would be very different from the rest of history, is if technology stayed exactly the same.

Re: Near Future of PCs
You know we are talking about a man that once stated that no one would ever need more than 640K in an age where the Mac was showing the world the future of user-friendly computing. This is the same man that saw the Internet as a fad until Netscape started making a mint from its browser. The phrase Bill Gates foresight is oxymoronic. He has never and still does not have any vision. All he and the executive staff at Microsoft are capable of doing is sitting back an watching what the truly creative people do. Once someone demonstrates that their new idea is profitable, Microsoft comes along and either buys the true innovators out or, failing that, use their OS dominance to impose a half-baked rip-off copy on the masses knowing that most people will never go beyond what they get pre-installed on their computer for free.

Anything that Bill Gates has to say about the future of computing should be taken with less than a grain of salt.

Safe to say that it should be entirely ignored, like the State of the Union addresses by a certain pseudo-texan.
