iPod out-of-warranty repairs

saw this over on MacNN:

A MacNN reader followed-up on yesterday's iPod failure notes: "Apple Retail stores have been authorized to perform out of warranty repairs for free on iPods. This has not been publically announced, but when I brought my iPod in for a repair one of the 'Geniuses' told me that it was free of charge and told me about this free repairs."

Anyone hear or see anything about this??

it looks like it's only in europe where consumer laws mandate a one-year minimum warranty. i just brought my ipod in for repair (the entire front panel jiggled a bit) and they insisted i had dropped or banged it (which i hadn't). a replacement would cost me $250. being that it's still working and just annoying, i'll wait it out and maybe upgrade to a 20GB when it comes out.

How long has the 10GB one been out? I wonder how much longer till they upgrade to a 20GB or something... How many GB of MP3's (or files you'd want to put on the iPod) do you have, that you would necessitate a 20GB iPod instead of a 10GB or 5GB, akiang?

Personally I am a quite upset about Apple's repair policy of the iPod. It's ment to be carried in your pocket so it should really work in somewhat rugged environments. Of course there are limits like dropping it on cement pavements and such (I was present in an apple retail store when somebody cam ein and complained his Ti fell onto concrete and broke! Imagine that! it BROKE!

Mental note: Do NOT drop Ti on pavement...).

The 10 GB one has been out since MW Tokyo I believe and I would expect a 20 GB one at MWNY at the latest. The 20 GB drives are there, Apple just has to implement them and slap a ridiculously high price on it before the masses can gobble them up. Maybe we will finally see a price drop though? Who knows... or even a rubber case so they can finally be dropped on concrete pavements. I hear Dell computers are designed to do precisely that. Preferably from an altitude of about 20,000 feet.

i currently have about 18GB of music (or over 9 days worth). the mp3's are ripped at 193kps(?). it would be nice if they made them more rugged though. i absolutely love my iPod, but i'm pretty unhappy about the support. in addition to the front panel jiggle, the scroll wheel is really loose and will keep turning based on momentum. this is the second unit with scroll wheel problems -- the wheel popped off almost completely on the first one i had. fortunately, they were able to replace that one. i wonder if b&o has as many problems with the wheel on its phone?
