If this software does what is claimed and does it well, it is a bargain.

I've had limited success using ffmegX to converter flv files into mpg/avi/etc formats, but VisualHub has worked without a hitch. I'm going to try it with vob files next...fingers crossed. Tom

True. And what distinguishes it from more expensive alternatives such as Sorenson Squeeze or Cleaner?

Re: 'Universal video converter' debuts
I have a Casio Exilim EX-750 camera that shoots really nice MPEG-4 video at 640X480 resolution/30 fps. The only problem is that it is a proprietary microsoft MPEG-4 format (so much for standards) that I cannot edit on my mac. I can open and play it with VLC player, but cannot import it into iMovie or FCP to edit any of it. All of that has now changed with this app. A simple conversion to MP4 and all my stuff is now editable. I am SO FREAKIN HAPPY with this , I couldn'y buy a license fast enough. I tested a 1:30 min clip I shot of my son at the zoo last weekend and output it to every available format. The only bug I found was that as a .wmv file, I had picture but no sound and as a mpeg2 file, I had sound but no picture. As any flavor of MPEG-4 it looks great. The Flash video and iPod video video was surprisinly good and really did a great job reducing file size. Outputting to MP4 is the way to go on the mac.

Re: 'Universal video converter' debuts
I find that Roxio Popcorn works very nicely for converting video to PSP or GP2X (which requires DivX AVI). Some videos created with FFmpegX don't play on my PSP and I have lots of trouble making videos playable on my GP2X with FFmpegX. If I didn't already own Popcorn I'd probably get this.

Not every format VisualHub outputs is QuickTime-compatible. DVD and MPEG-2 files, for example, aren't QuickTime-kosher.

It doesn't appear to convert to m2v from the web page, and I hope they add it soon because that is the format I like to drop into DVD SP for fastest results.

Well, I can think of one thing that'll make me hold onto Cleaner. AFAIK, it has the only inverse telecine solution for Macs. It's slow, but at least it works.

Re: 'Universal video converter' debuts
about time somebody did an EASY drag drop convert no fuss... The (video) codec jungle is getting worse by the minute, .avi, .mov various standards. Thank you to software like VLC and this making a little bit of sense.
I have just paid for it, I hope it does what it says on the "bottle", but as mentioned in previous posts, you have to pay due to the sense of humour while making serious software

You needn't waste your money on iSquint just to play the Casio Exilim movies. Here is a EX_M42S Quicktime Component that will allow you to play, edit, etc all your movies for free. (Under a GPL license)

It's amazing what a Google search will turn up... hint, hint....

Enjoy!

I know what you mean but just to put records straight iSquint is free while VisualHub cost money as it has more features. Same maker though...

Re: 'Universal video converter' debuts
I've been using this program for a few days now and I must say that it's awesome. I had a pretty nice system for converting my movies from one format to another using freeware, but none of the programs ever worked as well as Visual Hub. For $24 you can't go wrong. My only complaint so far is on the quality slider, I haven't been able to get it to convert any movies to the highest quality (mind you, the standard setting still looks incredibly sharp, and I can't tell much difference between the standard and high outputs so it's really not that big of a deal).

Re: 'Universal video converter' debuts
I've seen this, and it looks great. (I'm a huge fan of iSquint)

Considering how well iSquint handles MPEG-1 files, I'm definately contemplating purchasing this.

However, I have QT Pro. Apart from the other codecs supported, is it all that much better? iSquint still converts the MPEG-1s I have to iPod perfectly, so I don't have that much need for Visual Hub.

However - about this MPEG-2 export - If I was to export, say, a DV movie from iMovie to MPEG-2, could I burn it in iDVD, without iDVD re-encoding the whole film? It would be VERY handy - since each 10-minute film I make could be encoded whenever I have a little free time - rather than having to let iDVD sit for 5 hours, simply encoding... (I'm on a Powerbook G4)

Also - since I don't have the Apple MPEG-2 component, will iDVD read it properly?

It's too bad that the Help! Menu isn't Beatles lyrics anymore - lol.

Thanks,

Dan
